A lot of smiling faces tonight, the night itself was looking doubtful to say
the least at 5 o'clock. I was caught in some surface flooding while placing the
controls out tonight. But at 6 o'clock, it became clear and it became obvious
what a great night it was going to be. The map itself was hot off the press and
a number of problems have been identified on it. One road that was the obvious
route from control CY to the event centre was not in fact on the ground. Some
improvement will be made to where some of the tracks come out on to Remuera Rd.
We will mark the street number on the map for the future. Control CS may have
shifted but was in the right place when collected back in.
Apart from these issues there were no other major complaints.
So based on this you all appear to have had a great time.

A really different evening from last week - clear and crisp before the start
but everyone looked nice and warm at the end. Thanks very much to Aiden for his
efforts in checking the map out before the event and for designing the control
placements. He did a great job - look at the results below - lots of times very
close to 1 hour.
We've had a safety thought. We'll try to put a cell phone number on the map in
the future in case you get injured or lost and need rescuing. Alternatively you
could wait by a control until we come round to collect them and we could then
pick you up.
Did anyone look at the dogs training? They were just wonderful at their agility
activities and fast too. Lucky they weren't on our courses!
Next week is the last of these street event in this set. If you haven't yet got
to one - next week is your opportunity. We are starting from Goldie St in St
Heliers. You'll find us just up from Tamaki Drive beside the reserve, near the
end of Polygon Rd.
After the night street events we have a series of park 'sprint' races. That is
sprint for some and a more leisurely short course for others. The first of these
will be on Sunday week (28th May at Unitec - not very far from tonights start
point). The details we emailed previously are:
WINTER SPRINT SERIES
These events will take place on Saturday afternoons in parks around Auckland
(NOTE: there is now an exception as there is an event on the first Saturday -
the first sprint event will be on SUNDAY 28 May). There will be 3 short courses,
aimed for a winning time of 10 to 12 minutes. (Approximately 3km, 2km, and a
simpler course of 1.5-2km). We will use electronic timing, will ask you to pre
enter(see below) and will allocate start times at one minute intervals (or may
be even 30 second), starting from 4pm and will get your map as you start. Those
who have not pre-entered will be allocated start times at the end. The idea of a
sprint race is it is short enough for you to try and complete it while going
fast (thinking on the run!!) and the competitive orienteers will certainly be at
full speed. However, if you wish to go out at a more leisurely pace for a short
walk in the park you are very welcome to do so (keeping in mind that it is
approaching mid winter so it will be dark by 5.30!) If we are in a suitable
venue (with suitable weather!) we will bring along a BBQ and cook up some
sausages for when you finish ($1). We have been very fortunate indeed to have
had 2 cases of Kirkpatrick Estate 2004 unwooded Chardonnay wine donated for this
series, so there will be a competition run across the 3 events for cumulative
placings. There will be a prize (2 bottles of wine first, one bottle second) for
the overall winners for course 1 - under 21, men and women, and 21+ men and
women, course 2 - under 17 men, under 19 women, 40+ women, 50+ men course 3 -
under 14 men and women There will be substitute for the wine for those under 18!
There will also be a spot draw at each event Cost - Club members $5* senior, $3*
student, Non members $7* senior, $4* student * E-card hire - $3 if you need to
hire an e-card. E-cards free for 10 year olds and under.
Event 1 Sunday May 28th - Carrington map UNITEC - Gate 3
Event 2 Saturday 10th June - St Kentigern College, Pakuranga (to be confirmed -
permission being sought)
Event 3 Saturday 17th June - Auckland Training College
PRE-ENTER the SPRINT RACES:- If you think you'll be coming along please email us
your name, grade (from those listed above) and e-card number if you have one.
Let us know which events you'll be coming to. We'll use your entry to allot
start times and get you entered on the computer.- With the short start intervals
you can be sure you'll start at or shortly after 4pm. You can enter on the day
but it will be easier for us if we know you intend to come.
Don't forget there is the 6th and final Summer Forest Series event in Woodhill
forest this Sunday (21st). Forest entry from Restall Rd.
Also, the fundraising weekend on 27/28 May. Three hour rogaine on the Saturday
and the mountain bike orienteering on the Sunday. Entries close this Saturday
(20th). Details at http://www.geocities.com/nwocnz/rogaine.html

Queens Birthday 3 day series 3/4/5 June - although it's late you can still
enter. For entry forms and information http://www.geocities.com/nwocnz
Results from Pulpit Rock on Sunday are below. Also the winsplits are available
too at http://www.obasen.nu/winsplits/online/en/ or follow the link from the NW
results web page. Also a key was found in the forest - it may have been there
for some time. A photo of the key is on our website http://www.geocities.com/nwocnz
IMPORTANT - Please remember that we use the forest and the forest roads at the
generosity of Carter Holt Harvey. To make sure we continue to get access please
obey the rules! - You must have your car headlights while on the forest roads so
TURN THEM ON on at the entrance off Restall Road. - ALWAYS drive with caution -
this means keep your speed down! We received a complaint at the weekend so
please do your bit to help us keep our sport in the forest.
