Details
below. Yet
another lovely evening for exploring Western Springs
tonight
on the great course Kieran and Lyn provided for us.
It was quite difficult to
weave amongst the geese and pukeko in parts, wasn’t
it – to say nothing of all
the hens and roosters around the car park. I was
hoping we might be left some
fresh eggs! There were
also lots of animal noises echoing
out of the zoo. I think the animals must have been
surprised by all the people
in the zoo after normal closing, for the zoo ‘Late
night’ and concert. They
certainly were being vocal. It is not very often in
New Zealand you can
orienteer with the sound of elephants trumpeting
close by! Next
week Summer Nav is again on WEDNESDAY, 27th
Feb,
at Lloyd Elsmore Park, starting from beside Lady
Marie Drive. This can be
accessed off Cascades Rd or by coming along Sir
Lloyd Drive, off Pakuranga
Highway. We are hoping to add in a memory course at
this event, to give a
little bit more of a challenge to those preparing
for the Nationals. But
before the event next week there are TWO events this
weekend. THIS
SATURDAY NIGHT we have the first of our SUMMERNAV
NIGHT
EVENTS at Hobsonville Point, accessed along Buckley
Ave. These events are lots
of fun so if you have not done one before, how about
coming and giving it a go.
It is included as part of the SummerrNav season
ticket if you have a season
pass. Young children can start from dusk (but it is
fun to be late enough that
their torch will at least be needed for some of the
course). Others start from
dark – probably about 8:30 or 8:45 depending on the
cloud cover, till 9.30.
There will just be 3 courses – 1 and 2 will be of
the same difficulty, 3 will
be quite short and easy. DON’T FORGET TO BRING A GOOD
TORCH OR HEADLAMP AND YOUR E CARD IF YOU
OWN ONE AS WE ARE USING ELECTRONIC TIMING. Having
warmed up on Saturday night, on SUNDAY, 24th
there is what was to be the second (but is now the
first!) of the A series at
Duder’s Regional Park, just along the coast from
Maraetai (or out from Clevedon).
Starts from 10am to 12.30. This event is on a farm
park so sorry, no dogs (but
at least it will not be cancelled because of fire
risk!! – Apologies to those
who had to change their plans when the event last
Sunday had to be cancelled –
this is the first time any of us can remember not
being able to hold an orienteering
event in Woodhill because of fire danger but it was
not hard to understand why
the fire service closed the road into the forest – it
certainly is dry and
there have been far too many fires already in our
forests this summer. This
event is now scheduled for Sunday 21st
April as the last, rather
than the first of the A series. PLEASE NOTE
– there is an error in the printed SummerNav
brochure for the final event of the year at Alexandra
Park. It is listed as
Wednesday 19th March. This should be TUESDAY
19th March
