Welcome back to the start of the second half of the 25th Auckland Orienteering SummerNav series.
Tonight's courses around Unitec got us off to a great start with a different start location, courses which many people said they found interesting and enjoyed, and a lot of map areas with construction going on within the campus preparing for the new IBM Delivery Centre. See http://www.unitec.ac.nz/news-events/ibm-delivery-centre/ibm-delivery-centre_home.cfm
Thanks to Cath and Daria for tonight's challenging and interesting courses.
A couple of participants tonight managed to squeeze in one last orienteering event in before heading off to the airport to start the long journey home to Europe and beyond after competing in the Oceania and World Cup events: Bon-voyage!
The orienteering Oceania events, World Cup races, and Sprint the Bay, were held in the lower North Island and Hawkes Bay area early January with over 920 entries in the events. Photos are available and videos will be released over the next few months - there were lots of people taking photos and recording footage over the days. http://www.oceania2013.co.nz
Sorry to those affected tonight by us running out of Unitec course 4 printed maps. We try our best to estimate numbers and print more than we think will be necessary - but there are times when we don't get it quite right. Thanks to those who gave back their map for others to use. If you would like to get a copy of the course you ran, please email us on auckoc@hotmail.com with your postal address and we will send you a printed copy or arrange for it to be available for you to pick up at the next event.
Next week: - We are starting at Churchill Park, Kinsale Ave, Glendowie. Start anytime between 5:30pm and 6:45pm.

It was really great to see so many people out enjoying the beautiful warm evening at Churchill Park tonight, including lots of first timers. I heard several people who were heading for the tide on their way home - it certainly was the night for it. Thanks to Sabeth, a first time setter, and Toby for the really enjoyable courses which made great use of the park. There were lots of very favourable comments about the groups of controls on course 1 and 2 where you had you choose your own route - great to have something a bit different.
Next week the event is again on Tuesday, 5th February at Point England Reserve, at the end of Point England Rd, Point England. The little beach here had major works done on it last year and is now a delightful little swimming beach but unfortunately it is a 3.30pm tide so if you want a swim you will have to have it before your run. We look forward to seeing you there.

Apologies to anyone whose name does not appear in the results today - the clip cards were battling to stay on the strings with the wind that was roaring around! Most competitors, however, seemed to find it a nice cooling relief. Thanks to Bruce Cassey (and Panda) for today's courses. What you really should have done is offer to take Panda with you on your run - she could have lead you to all the controls, as long as she did not see any swallows to chase on the way!
Next week Summer Nav moves to WEDNESDAY, 13th Feb, at the Auckland Domain, starting from near the Band Rotunda. Registration will be in The Crescent, near the intersection with Football Rd.
We also have the first of the forest events for 2013, on SUNDAY 17th February, at the end of Rimmer Rd, Woodhill Forest, starts between 10am and 12.30. Make sure you mark this down on your calendar now! This event, however, is dependent on the forest not being closed due to fire risk. Please watch the AOC web site before the event to ensure it has not had to be cancelled. In preparation for this event if there are any SummerNav orienteers who have not yet tried a forest event we will hold a brief coaching session at the end of the event next Wednesday to give you a few pointers to forest orienteering. This will take place at about 7.15 so you can do your run first. If you are interested in taking part in this please tell us at registration when you arrive. This forest event is the first of the A Series - a series of events to be run on Sundays by the 3 Auckland clubs over the next few months. These events will have a choice of 8 courses (4 red (difficult), 2 orange (A little easier but require you to use a compass and read the contours), one yellow (fairly easy, controls all visible from and within 50m of a track or linear feature) and one white (very easy - controls on tracks or linear features, with a control at every decision point). They will be ideal for people new to forest orienteering but also of a high standard to give the experienced orienteer plenty of good practice leading up to the Nationals at Easter.
PLEASE NOTE - there is an error in the printed SummerNav brochure for the final event of the year at Alexandra Park. It is listed as Wednesday 19th March. This should be TUESDAY 19th March

What a great turn out there was at the Domain tonight - and a very big welcome to the many first timers - we look forward to seeing you back again soon. Our thanks to Olivia, a first time setter, who with the help of Guy had constructed a great set of courses for us tonight - a good mix of interesting route choice and variety of places to go, without TOO much scrambling.
Next week Summer Nav is again on WEDNESDAY, 20th Feb, at the Western Springs, starting from the back of the Zoo car park, off Motions Road. This is a beautiful park so bring along a picnic to enjoy beside the lake after your run. (although you may have to share it with all the birds and rabbits!)
We also have the first of the forest events for 2013, THIS SUNDAY 17th February, at the end of Rimmer Rd, Woodhill Forest, starts between 10am and 12.30. This event, however, is dependent on the forest not being closed due to fire risk. PLEASE WATCH THE AOC WEBSITE before going to ensure it has not had to be cancelled. We believe we will know by Friday evening. If you have not tried forest orienteering before, do come along to this event (and the rest of the A series) Forest orienteering is just great - you cannot help but love it!! This forest event is the first of the A Series - a series of events to be run on Sundays (every Sunday between now and Easter) by the 3 Auckland clubs.

Yet another lovely evening for exploring Western Springs tonight on the great course Kieran and Lyn provided for us. It was quite difficult to weave amongst the geese and pukeko in parts, wasn't it - to say nothing of all the hens and roosters around the car park. I was hoping we might be left some fresh eggs! There were also lots of animal noises echoing out of the zoo. I think the animals must have been surprised by all the people in the zoo after normal closing, for the zoo 'Late night' and concert. They certainly were being vocal. It is not very often in New Zealand you can orienteer with the sound of elephants trumpeting close by!
Next week Summer Nav is again on WEDNESDAY, 27th Feb, at Lloyd Elsmore Park, starting from beside Lady Marie Drive. This can be accessed off Cascades Rd or by coming along Sir Lloyd Drive, off Pakuranga Highway. We are hoping to add in a memory course at this event, to give a little bit more of a challenge to those preparing for the Nationals.
But before the event next week there are TWO events this weekend.
THIS SATURDAY NIGHT we have the first of our SUMMERNAV NIGHT EVENTS at Hobsonville Point, accessed along Buckley Ave. These events are lots of fun so if you have not done one before, how about coming and giving it a go. It is included as part of the SummerrNav season ticket if you have a season pass. Young children can start from dusk (but it is fun to be late enough that their torch will at least be needed for some of the course). Others start from dark - probably about 8:30 or 8:45 depending on the cloud cover, till 9.30. There will just be 3 courses - 1 and 2 will be of the same difficulty, 3 will be quite short and easy. DON'T FORGET TO BRING A GOOD TORCH OR HEADLAMP AND YOUR E CARD IF YOU OWN ONE AS WE ARE USING ELECTRONIC TIMING
Having warmed up on Saturday night, on SUNDAY, 24th there is what was to be the second (but is now the first!) of the A series at Duder's Regional Park, just along the coast from Maraetai (or out from Clevedon). Starts from 10am to 12.30. This event is on a farm park so sorry, no dogs (but at least it will not be cancelled because of fire risk!! - Apologies to those who had to change their plans when the event last Sunday had to be cancelled - this is the first time any of us can remember not being able to hold an orienteering event in Woodhill because of fire danger but it was not hard to understand why the fire service closed the road into the forest - it certainly is dry and there have been far too many fires already in our forests this summer. This event is now scheduled for Sunday 21st April as the last, rather than the first of the A series.
PLEASE NOTE - there is an error in the printed SummerNav brochure for the final event of the year at Alexandra Park. It is listed as Wednesday 19th March. This should be TUESDAY 19th March

COMING EVENTS
Yet another lovely evening out at Lloyd Elsmore tonight - I do hope we manage to get through the whole of the SummerNav before this wonderful spell of evenings comes to an end, although we do need some good heavy rain during the nights for the farmers, gardens and so that the pine forests open! Lloyd Elsmore certainly is a hive of industry on a night like this, isn't it with every sport imaginable taking place. It is really great to see so many people out doing things. Watching the little children on the exciting new BMX track was really fascinating - New Zealand's future Sarah Walkers! It was good to see quite a few people tackle the memory course tonight and many others show an interest to try one in the future. A memory course certainly makes you focus on the main features on the map to get you to the right area and then the fine detail of where you will find the control. These are skills that become really important for orienteering in the forest. If you want to improve your skills then give it a go next time a memory course is on offer. Next week SummerNav moves to THURSDAY, 7th March at Craigavon Park, Green Bay. The event centre is in the parking area off Connaught St, just down from the junction with Portage Rd.
A Series Sunday 3rd March, Kiwitahi -on the other side of SH16 from Woodhill Forest, before Helensville. The event is at Alf's Access Rd which is off Kiwitahi Rd which is the next road on the right off SH16 past the Restall Rd entrance to Woodhill Forest. Sign posting will begin from this point. Start times are between 10 am and 12.30 pm with course closure at 2 pm. There will be 7 courses with 4 red courses, 1 orange, 1 yellow and 1 white course, so catering for absolute beginners to experienced orienteers. If anyone wishes to try a course, and wants to go out again the second run is free. The terrain is on privately owned land with a mixture of farmland and open pines, and absolutely NO DOGS are allowed, and of course, no smoking.
The second and final of the SummerNav NIGHT events will be on Saturday night, 9th March at Ambury Park. Starts for children from dusk (about 8.15) and others once it is dark (about 8.45) till about 9.30. Come out early and enjoy a picnic or BBQ dinner in these lovely surrounding while you watch the sun set across the water. You can even camp the night. I can recommend this as a great thing to do - it is a lovely to wake in the morning to the sound of all the birds. You feel you are really out in the wilds while in fact only being a short distance from home. Ring the park rangers to make a booking.
Last Saturday night we held the first of two night SummerNav events - this one at Hobsonville. Again a beautiful evening and a large crowd enjoyed a really fun evening. We were delighted to be inviuted to use this area by the Hobsonville Land Company. Kathleen Waldock at Hobsonville Land Company is looking for any photos taken at the event that could be used on their web site or Facebook page.
If any of you present that night took suitable photos you can email directly to her: kathleen.waldock [@] hlc.co.nz Her phone number and web page are 09 261 5280 www.hobsonvillepoint.co.nz

It is hard to believe that in less than 2 weeks we will have held our final SummerNav for the season. It seems no time since the beginning with 20 events awaiting us. Thanks to the Greenwood family (Becky, Ali and Jeff) for tonight's interesting and challenging courses. Most people seemed to feel that they had definitely had their money's worth by the time they returned to the campermatic. Did some of you try taking the flying fox along the way?
Coming Events:
This SATURDAY NIGHT we have the second and final of the NIGHT events at Ambury Park. Come along and make an evening of it by bringing a picnic to enjoy before you go out on your run. There is also camping available there if you want to spend the night - a great thing to do. Contact the park rangers to make a booking 366 2000. Starts will be from dusk for children (probably a bit after 8) and dark for others. Last starts by 9.30. Don't forget to bring a torch!!>
The A series event this Sunday is on the Slater Rd map, on the South Kaipara peninsula, about 15 minutes north of the Parakai round about. Starts form 10 am to 12.30 (you can go straight from your camping at Ambury!!)
Next week SummerNav is again on Thursday at Cornwall Park, starting from Haydn Ave, off Manukau Rd. There is quite a bit of parking in Haydn Ave but if you park inside Cornwall Park do make sure you are not inside an area which will be locked up, or if you are that you are out before the gates are shut at 8pm

Next week - Final SummerNav TUESDAY 19th Alexandra Park Racecourse
Sunday event CANCELLED
It was really great to see another good turnout on yet another beautiful evening - can we manage to get through next week's final event still without being rained on? Thanks to Elizabeth and Roger for the courses tonight, organised under difficult circumstances, trying to comply with restrictions placed on us by Auckland Council. It was sad to not be allowed to use any of the mountain as it is just lovely up on that very special hill on a night like tonight. The reason many of us orienteer is because of the special and varied places it takes us to. We are continuing to work with the Council and its heritage team, hoping to come to a better compromise before next season as we strongly believe that orienteers appreciate the natural environment and leave no trace.
Our final SummerNav of the season is next TUESDAY , 19th March at Alexandra Park Racecourse, accessing from Campbell Cresent. PLEASE NOTE THIS DAY IS DIFFERENT FROM THAT PRINTED IN OUR BROCHURE
Sadly the event that was scheduled for this coming Sunday has had to be CANCELLED because of fire risk in the forest. This is the first year we have had to cancel events - I guess there is a downside to everything - we have had a magnificent summer with lovely evenings for orienteering but it is very disappointing to be unable to access the forest. There is, however, a whole autumn, winter and spring of Sunday events to come so there will be lots more opportunity.
For those of you feeling disappointed by the end of the City events for the summer, there will be other sorts of events within the city later in the year - more detail about these next week.
Last Saturday night we held a night event at Ambury Park. The results from that evening are on our website.

It is always with a tinge of sadness that we hold the final SummerNav for the season but we certainly can feel fortunate indeed to have had beautiful evenings almost every week. With such fantastic weather it is hard to believe we are finishing because winter is approaching but the nights are certainly starting to close in on us, making control collection at the end of the evening quite a challenge.
There is a packed full programme in the months between now and the start of next season's SummerNav at the end of October so don't sit around waiting for it to begin again. Do come and join us.
As well as all the Sunday orienteering events on the outskirts of Auckland (and if you have enjoyed Summer Nav you can't help but find these great fun) there are the city night events and the city Sprints to try.
The night events are on a week day night, with a mass start at 7pm, for about an hour. You get a black and white street map (WITHOUT street names) and the controls are all on the streets. There are 2 series of these events, the first in May and the second in September. The 4th event in each series is a Rogaine of either 2 or 3 hours.
The sprints are another series of 4 events on Saturday afternoons in June/July. These are mainly on maps with buildings and are great for a short fast sprint (winning times if sprinting of about 12 minutes) but they are also ideal for going out at a more sedate pace, for a course similar to the SummerNav course 3.
The whole programme for the rest of the year is now up on the AOC website. The details of the venues will be added closer to the time but get the dates marked on your calendar now!
Our thanks to Tommy Hayes, a first time setter, for the courses on this final night, and to Dwayne for his assistance. You will see from the results that Tommy went out to show the speed that course 1A could be done in - with that speed it is no wonder that Tommy is starting to get some very good results in the Secondary Schools events!
The event this Sunday is being run by Counties Manukau on the Sunset Views map, Port Waikato. It will be signposted after you cross the Waikato River at Tuakau. Starts from 10am to 12.30. Also, all the very best to everyone travelling down to Canterbury for the National Orienteering Champs at Easter - Go well and let's see plenty of names from the Auckland Region featuring in the titles. Also all the very best to the Diocesan School team heading away to Portugal very soon to represent New Zealand in the World Secondary School Champs - GO WELL!!

There are times to be grateful that the weather man does not always get it correct and tonight was certainly one of those. With sun shining through the promised very wet day it seemed inevitable that it had to turn to rain by tonight but we were greeted by a lovely evening, topped off by a great display of fireworks as we were collecting in the controls. Thanks Bruce (and Panda) for your enjoyable courses tonight. Panda insisted on many visits over the past few weeks to make sure all the control sites in Churchill and Glover Park were well checked out!
Next week we move back to Tuesday night (12 November) on Ambury Farm Park in Mangere. Accessed from the end of Ambury Rd. The start will be near the park headquarters. This is a lovely place for a BBQ or picnic dinner so come prepared to say and enjoy the lovely surroundings. There will certainly be no shortage of animals and birds to talk to next week. We are hoping that we will be able to have the official copy of our programme available next week - Please do help yourself to a bundle and distribute them wherever you can. As this is a farm park - no dogs - sorry.

A very big welcome to everyone who came along tonight - it was really great to see all our old faithful back again this season -even a few after a few years elsewhere. It was also really great to welcome so many newcomers along tonight. We do hope you all really enjoyed your explore of the Domain and we look forward to seeing you back for the rest of the very full season of 20 events. It was also good to see many of you purchasing seasons tickets tonight. Not only does it mean you intend to be regular attenders, but it also does make it easier both for you and for us at the events to come. If you did not buy a seasons ticket tonight but would like to do so you can do so at an event for the next few weeks or, simpler, you can direct credit it to the club bank account which you will find on the web site (under the information tab of the SummerNav page) . If you have already paid to come to an event you can deduct what you paid off the amount you pay for your seasons pass. Also if you have not yet joined an orienteering club and are considering doing so the seasons ticket, club membership combo for new orienteering club members really is a very good deal - you are paying very little more to join the club over what you would pay for your seasons pass and the membership will be valid until 2015.
Next week the event is on WEDNESDAY (6th November) at Churchill Park, Glendowie. The access will be from Kinsale Ave, off Kesteven Ave which runs between Riddell Rd and Bay Rd. Come along and meet the friendliest cows in Auckland! We look forward to seeing you there!

It was certainly a beautiful evening out at Ambury tonight so that everyone could enjoy their exploration of this lovely park and enjoy Peter's course. Thanks, Peter for all the work you put in. Although the park is fairly simple it was amazing how many people came back saying they had managed to get themselves confuse and head in the wrong direction. It was great to see such a good turn out and some staying on to enjoy a picnic in the park. It was also impressive to see a group had travelled all the way from Thames for the evening - that really shows enthusiasm!
Next week we move back to WEDNESDAY again (20th November) and will be in a very different environment from tonight, on the Epsom Campus map. Although mainly around buildings this is one of our best city maps and as the University is planning on selling it soon we may not have it use for many more SummerNav events. We will be starting at the end of St Andrews Rd, with registration either beside Melville Park or just through into the Campus grounds, depending on parking availability. Epsom Campus certainly provided tonight's course planner Toby a chance to challenge us with multiple course legs offering lots of route choice around the complex of buildings and paths. Thank you Toby - many people returned saying they enjoyed the challenging courses!
Well done to all the first time orienteers who tackled the courses (especially course 2) and came back smiling. Great to see several people including a very keen youngster decide to do another course after having so much fun on their first course. Some experienced SummerNav orienteers were heard saying they really had to concentrate and navigate carefully! Toby confirmed the distances reported were measured off the map based on the likely route taken for the course.
Next week's SummerNav is on Wednesday 27th November at the popular Western Springs - starting on the zoo side in Motions road. The Western Springs map offers a chance to navigate around the park full of lakes and the nearby college and school grounds. It's also a great chance to see all the bird wildlife and listen out for the lions and other sounds coming from the zoo next door!

We got our timing just a bit out tonight with the skies opening up for the first time in weeks just as most people were about to set out on their courses. Despite this it was great to see so many, not to be daunted, heading out to enjoy Ryan's courses. Ryan was a first time course setter and did a great job at keeping you thinking around this lovely park. Thanks Ryan, and also to Jeff who controlled tonight's event. The wet clip cards made writing on and hence reading the clip cards a bit of a challenge so apologies in advance if there are some slightly unusual versions of your name and also the times. I think the animals must have sensed the arrival of the rain - early on in the evening there was quite a rumpus coming from the elephants and the lions - they were probably looking forward to the arrival of some rain as much as out gardens were.
Next week the event moves to THURSDAY; on the 5th December (hard to believe December will be upon us!) on the Eastern Beach/Macleans College map, starting from the reserve at the far eastern end of Eastern Beach. It will be an incoming tide so by the time you have finished your run the water should almost be in far enough for a swim to freshen up. For those that have not tried a dip this summer, the sea is incredibly warm at the moment - as warm as it gets in midsummer - so bring along your togs and picnic so you can relax and enjoy this lovely spot after your run (we must be due another lovely fine night after tonight!)

The small streams and tracks through the Macleans Park regenerating forest valleys certainly were showing the signs of the day's rain - making it very slippery on some tracks for those without good shoe grip. Thanks to Anna, James, and Martin for their interesting courses with plenty of route choice and good distance. Course 1 and 2 enjoyed the upgrade to the new sprint quality Half Moon Bay area map for surrounding streets used earlier this year for the Auckland Orienteering Sprint Championships. We were lucky to arrive with the rain stopped, several pohutukawa Christmas trees on the Esplanade putting on a great floral display, and several kite surfers enjoying the incoming tide and strong onshore breeze - which eased as the evening went on.
Next week on Thursday 12th December we are visiting Hamlins Hill Mutukaroa Regional Park. €œA green oasis amid Auckland's urban and industrial sprawl, this park offers open pastures and expansive views. The volunteer SummerNav setter Scott recommends people on the longest courses 1 and 2 carry a compass (as there will be some compass legs in the Manuka), and wear leg cover (as there is currently a bit of gorse on the west side of the hill). Please bring your compass if you have one or we will have around 20 available for borrowing on the day.
For directions and more details http://regionalparks.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/hamlinshillmutukaroa and see the map on our website at http://www.orienteeringauckland.org.nz/summernav/

Hamlins Hill is the largest non-volcanic hill on the Auckland Isthmus. The view from the top offers considerable contrast between the regenerating native forest and neighbouring industrial area and motorway with most of Auckland's iconic volcanic hills visible in the background. Many volunteer hours have been put in planting natives over the area and eradicating invasive plant species. The Auckland Council website includes information on how to contact and help with the regional parks volunteer programs.
Our thanks to Scott who certainly provided some challenging courses tonight. If you found it difficult, don't be discouraged - Hamlins Hill is the most challenging terrain in the SummerNav series. The low visibility in the regenerating forest required some advanced navigation skills reading contours and compass work.
We apologise to anyone who got a zap from the electric fences while crossing a fence early on in the evening - we turned them off by 6pm. The cattle seemed to enjoy both the competitors and controls. A couple of the cardboard control flag were eaten by cattle. One steer wasn't satisfied with just the flag and was spotted walking off with control stand XT in mouth. This photo was taken after the control was returned (not quite in the right spot) - and just before he slobbered and removed it again temporarily.

What a lovely evening in a lovely park to end the SummerNav events for 2013. Thank you Elizabeth and Alina for making excellent use of our restricted use of this map. We were disappointed this year to be restricted to Cornwall Park, rather than the combined area of Cornwall Park and One Tree Hill reserve but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and find they needed to keep thinking. As you know we have been declined access to all of the volcanic cones this year but the inclusion of the surrounding area of One Tree hill in this ban certainly added to the challenge of maintaining interesting courses within the regions of the parks we have been granted a permit to use.

We commence the second half of the 2013-2014 season next year on TUESDAY 21st January across the road from today, starting in Alexandra Park, accessing from Campbell Crescent. We look forward to seeing you all back fit and eager to go after a relaxing holiday season. In the meantime, have a wonderful Christmas and we wish you all the very best for 2014!!
