A Very Happy New Year to you and welcome back to the second half of the SummerNav season. It was great to see a good crowd of enthusiastic orienteers tonight, back after their holiday break, keen for a run. Our thanks to tonight's setter and controller, Kieran and Dwayne who were beavering away producing tonights course while the rest of us were lazing at the beach (or hiding inside from the rain, as the case may be).
Next week, on Tuesday 24th January we are at Churchill Park, in Glendowie, accessed off Kinsale Ave, off Bay Road. This park is a working farm tucked away in the centre of Glendowie. The cows are the friendliest I have ever met, having been hand reared. They don't even blink an eye as the local dogs out for their exercise trot by and most certainly will not move off the track as you approach. They love to be given a head scratch. After our incredibly wet summer the streams and marshes are genuine so it may pay not to wear your brand new shiny Christmas present shoes but there are lots of well formed tracks throughout the park if you don't want to go cross country. Make sure you pause long enough to admire the views from the higher points in the park and those that collect in the controls are likely to be treated to great views of the sunset.
We look forward to seeing you there!.

What a lovely evening to be out running - plenty of wind to keep you not too hot but lovely blue skies and sunshine. I do hope most of you paused long enough at the top of the map to admire the river and city views (while catching your breathe). It was really great to see so many new folk there tonight, as well as some faces from the distant past - welcome back! We hope to see you all again soon.
Lost property - Left in the campermatic - a water back pack and a pair of black trousers (Puma). We also have a spiderman watch from a previous event.
Next week SummerNav moves to THURSDAY, 2nd February, at Ambury Regional Park, Mangere Bridge, accessed at the end of Ambury Road. As this is a regional farm park unfortunately dogs are not allowed at this event. It is a lovely park to run around (flat as well!!), right on the edge of the Manukau Harbour, with a delightful collection of animals to talk to. There are permanent BBQs at the event centre (beside the park headquarters), so this is an ideal place to bring along a picnic and enjoy the evening after your run. Sunsets a highlight.
ADVANCE NOTICE -
The first of the NIGHT events - Saturday 11th Feb, Craigavon, Green Bay - starts from dusk for the very young, dark for others - Check out the batteries for your headlamps or torches now!!
First of the Sunday Forest events - Sunday 26th Feb Woodhill Forest - NOT TO BE MISSED

Another beautiful evening for orienteering. A really lovely spot too - I'm still there at the moment waiting for the great sunset (the clouds may spoil that though).
Sorry for misleading those on course 1 (and 2 a little bit) as the length was just over 10km and not the reported 7.4.
Thanks to first time setter, Martin for the courses tonight, giving us some good challenges amongst the rock. Should you have missed out on tonight's event, don't worry, you will get another opportunity to visit this lovely park, on Saturday 3rd March for the second of the night events. It is a bit different finding your way around in the dark!
Next week the event is also on Thursday, 9th Feb at Western Springs, starting from the Stadium, at the end of Stadium Rd.

A beautiful evening for a run - lovely and warm but not too hot. This on one of the best Auckland SummerNav maps made it a great night. Thanks very much to Elizabeth and daughters, Anna and Lucy for tonights courses.
Remember the night event this Saturday night (11th) at Craigavon Park - starting in Connaught St. Try an extra challenge of finding your way to the controls in the dark. The start time is when it is dark - which will be about 8:30pm (junior orienteers can start earlier if that suits them). Don't forget to bring a good headlamp or torch. You need to see where you are going and read the map. The controls have reflecting tape on them that shines when light strikes it.
Next week we have our event at Lloyd Elsmore Park on the Thursday (16th). The entry is off Pakuranga Highway - turn right if you are coming from the city at the traffic lights. We're having a memory course along with the usual courses to give those that want something a bit different something to challenge them.

It was a lovely cool evening, it's a pity the moon did not appear thru the clouds early in the evening but the sky cleared up but still no moon appeared!
(I did see the moon-rise through the trees during pack-up and it was spectacular. Thanks to New Lynn/Green Bay area "The Coffee Guy" who was onsite providing coffee and hot chocolate drinks service!)
Thanks to the first timer course setter, Stephane Brindel, for very challenging courses.
Next night event will be on Saturday 3rd March on Ambury Park.
This coming week the event is on Thursday, 16th Feb at Lloyd Elsmore Park, you enter thru Sir Lloyd Drive, Pakuranga. Usual courses will be supplied including a memory course.

SummerNav number 14 tonight saw another lovely, fine but hot night for running around Lloyd Elsmore. Only 6 more events left - the summer certainly disappears fast, doesn't it. It was great seeing a good number of people give the memory course a go. You do have to concentrate just a wee bit harder, don't you. Apologies to anyone who got confused by the control beside the skate bowl that got moved by someone during the event. It certainly did not end up where it was put out but hopefully they left it close enough for you all to find it. At least none of the controls ended up in the creek this year!
Next week the event changes to TUESDAY, 21st Feb, at Alexandra Park Trotting Club, entrance from Campbell Cresent, at the end of Market Road. The event centre will be in the carpark within the Alexandra Park grounds. There will also be a preparation for forest orienteering coaching session - see details below
SUNDAY week, (26th Feb) is the first of our forest events for the season. It is on the Pot Luck map, at the end of Rimmer Road, off SH16 a few kilometres before the Parakai roundabout. Starts between 10.00am and 12.30pm. Whether you are a regular orienteer or a first timer to the forest, make sure this is marked on your calendar now! Club orienteers, there are only 6 weeks from this event until the Nationals so make sure you take this opportunity to shake off the cobwebs. Those new to orienteering, if you are enjoying the park events then coming out to give forest orienteering a go is a must. Park orienteering is good but forest orienteering is just great!!
We will run a brief coaching session at the end of the SummerNav event next Tuesday (about 7.15) to introduce you to a few of the skills that will help you in the forest but which you may not have been using in the parks. Please tell us at registration when you arrive if you would like to join in this session so we have an idea of numbers. We will also running a coaching session at the end of the forest event on the 26th, about 1pm, after your run.
Other events coming up - The second and final of the night events will be on SATURDAY NIGHT, 3rd March at Ambury Park, Mangere. This is a great venue for night orieneering and you can even camp the night there afterwards! Just give the park rangers a call to tell them you will be doing so. We have done so many times now and have really enjoyed waking up the next morning surrounded by all the bird life at the park. Unfortunately dogs are not permitted on Ambury Park. Club orienteers, the Katoa Po night relays are on at Taupo the weekend after this events (10/11 March) so don't miss the chance to practice your night orienteering skills.

It is not very often that we orienteer with horses as our spectators but there were lots of heads sticking out of the stables looking very interested in what these mad humans were doing tonight. Thanks very much to Denise, another first time setter, for her great courses tonight, and to Jeff for his support. There were plenty of tired people by the end of this evening!
SUNDAY sees the first of our forest events for the year. We are all really looking forward to getting back out into the forest. There will be courses suitable for all levels of fitness and experience, from first timers to those wanting some practice for the Nationals at Easter. With the Nationals taking place in Woodhill this is a great opportunity to get some practice in this terrain. The event centre is at the end of Rimmer Rd, (with just the coastal strip before the beach). Take the NW motorway and continue on SH16 through Kumeu to just a short distance before Parakai. Turn left into Rimmer Rd and follow it to the end. The route will be signposted from Waimauku. Starts are between 10am and 12.30 with course closure at 2.30. There will be a short coaching session for beginners, after your run, at about 1:15pm. Costs Non members adult $16, Student $8 Family max $32 Members adult $10, Student $5, Family max $20 Sportident Hire $3
NEXT WEEK the SummerNav event is on TUESDAY 28th Feb at the Auckland Domain, by the band rotunda. Event centre on the Crescent, by Football Rd

Tonight's results, plus NIGHT EVENT THIS SATURDAY and NEXT WEEK'S EVENT
The Domain was certainly a hive of activity tonight with a great turn out of orienteers making the whole Domain almost as busy as the playing fields that were abuzz with soccer players. Thanks to Mel and Mike for the courses tonight. One regular orienteer commented that despite having orienteered on the Domain many times before they were still taken to some places they had never been before. This is one of the delights of orienteering as we discover that parks we think we know very well in fact are full of hidden surprises
NIGHT EVENT THIS Saturday, 3rd March Ambury Park Starts from dusk (about 8.15) for children and dark (from about 8.30 to 9.30) for others. There will be 3 courses of about 4.5km, 3km and 1.5km. Orienteering at night is a really fun thing to do. Make sure you bring a good torch or headlamp. The controls all have reflectors on them to help you find you way around. You are also able to camp the night at Ambury - highly recommended. Give the ranger a call to arrange this. Club members, this is your chance to get in a little bit of practice before Katoa Po night relays in Taupo the next Saturday night (11th March) Entries are due by this Saturday, so AOC members, please email auckoc@hotmail.com to let us know if you are able to compete in Taupo. This is an event not to be missed!
Next week te event is again on Tuesday 6th March at Highbrook Park. The event centre will be in Pukekiwiriki Rd which is accessed from Highbrook Drive, then El Korbar Dr. Highbrook Drive can be accessed from the Southern motorway, or coming from East Tamaki, along Allens Rd. This is a new area that has not been used for orienteering previously.

It is hard to believe that tonight was the 18th of out 20 SummerNav events , with just 2 more left before it is all packed away again until spring! The evening was still very warm for running but there were lots of fast times on this new map with smooth, flat running for most of the way. Thanks to first time setter, Vanessa for tonight's courses and to Roger for controlling the event which, on a map that is changing every week at the moment, was quite a challenge. We are hoping to be able to map a bit more of the area before our next use of the map so it will be even better by next time.
Next week, the second to last event moves to WEDNESDAY, 14th march on the Ellerslie Racecourse map, entry from Greenlane Road. Make sure you don't miss out on these last 2 SummerNav events.
For those of you heading down to Taupo for the club Night Relays (Katoa Po) on Saturday night, have a great time. There are always lots of stories to tell at the end of this annual event which is a highlight of the orienteering year.

As we head to the final of the SummerNav events for the season it becomes obvious why we need to finish - headlamps were very much needed as we collected in the last controls tonight. Thank you Peter and Rudy for tonight's courses. There were lots of people who had not orienteered at this venue before and enjoyed the different map. You even had the opportunity to look into hiring of a stretched limo if you could find your way passed all the school students looking at all their options for their school ball - I had no idea they ran a whole expo for school ball organisers!
It was very upsetting tonight to learn a landowner on the perimeter of the race course was most upset because an orienteer had jumped their fence and run through their property. PLEASE ensure you keep well clear of all private property or out of bounds areas marked on the map - they will be either olive green or red stripe. If land owners are not happy about our events in their area we will lose access and will be unable to hold events. It is getting more and more difficult every year to gain permission for events and we are extremely grateful for those that let us use their grounds, be it the council, schools or private owners. It only takes one person behaving irresponsibly to mean we could lose this privilege.
On a more positive note, the last SummerNav is next WEDNESDAY, 21st March, back at the favourite venue of ONE TREE HILL. We will be starting from Haydn Ave, beside the park, off Manukau road. As the nights are closing in we will do our best to be set up ready to go early. We look forward to a bumper turn out for this final event of the season.
The end of the SummerNav events, however signals the start of a very full programme for the rest of the year with forest or farm events most Sundays, the Nationals being held in the Auckland region at Easter, two four week series of night street events, one in May and the other in August/September and a Saturday afternoon sprint series in July/August. There certainly is no excuse for putting away your running shoes!!
This Sunday (18th) CM club has an event in Waiuku Forest, starts between 10 and 11.30. Sunday 25th there is a event organised by NW club in Woodhill Forest, entry via Restall Rd, Starts between 10 and 12.30, and Sunday 1st April there is an event run by Auckland, again entry via Restall Rd with starts between 10 and 12.30. All these events are open to everyone with courses suitable for all.

What a fantastic group of intrepid orienteers came along tonight to enjoy the last event of SummerNav for this season, despite the somewhat wet overhead and underfoot conditions. There were even several first timers who were not to be put off - that certainly bodes well for your future in the sport. Also some very young competitors smiling happily from inside their large rain coats. Thanks to Ewart and Mervyn for the courses tonight. A wet night like tonight makes it a very long time out in the weather from starting to put out controls about 3pm to finally heading for home about 9pm.
A big thank you to all who have contributed to make this years SummerNav a great success, from the many course setters, controllers, permission seekers amd everyone who has helped on the nights through to all of you who have come along to take part with friendly smiles and comments. We do hope to see most of you at the events throughout the rest of the year, either at the city night street events, the city sprints or out at the many forest events. And of course, SummerNav will swing into action once again at the end of October! If you did not pick up a calendar of events tonight there will be a full calendar on the website as well as more detailed information going up on the web closer to each event.
See you at an event soon!!

What a great evening to signal the start of SummerNav 2012-13. It was lovely to see such a lot of happy people out to enjoy it and to welcome back all the familiar faces from previous years. Those who stayed around to enjoy the evening after their run were treated to a spectacular view of the moon rising over the top of the museum - quite dramatic.
Thank you to all those who came tonight for your tolerance and understanding about the last minute changes that we had to make this evening to accommodate the conditions of our permit which we only received this afternoon - too late to alter anything. We are continuing to try and work with Council and their heritage team to smooth the way for the remainder of the season but progress is slow and painful so please continue to watch the website for the upcoming events as we still have to get formal permission for many. Once we do we will print the flyer which many of you were asking about tonight.
We hold a very strong belief that as orienteers we value the environment and leave no trace behind after an event. It is timely, as we have increasing difficulty to obtain permission to use the city parks, to remind people that it is very important that our claim to not harm is valid and we ask that you all respect our right to use these venues by ensuring you never go anywhere that could cause damage - even if that means taking a slightly longer route.
On a more positive note, the event next week is again on TUESDAY, 6th November on Hamlins Hill Regional Park (Mutukaroa) Penrose /Mt Wellington. The start is 1014 Great South Rd, just north of the junction with Sylvia Park Rd. Hamlins Hill used to be a fairly bare hill, for many years grazed by the freezing works before turning into a regional park. However in recent times there has been a great deal of planting of pockets of native forest, turning it into an increasingly attractive park. There is recent planting with small trees that is marked as out of bounds on the map but some of the forest is now becoming quite mature and has tracks formed through it allowing you to enjoy the bird life that now makes this home. We look forward to seeing you there!

After the absolutely perfect afternoon it was a bit disappointing to see black clouds appearing on the horizon just as people started to arrive today. However almost everyone escaped with nothing more than a few spots. Most people seemed to really enjoy visiting one of the lesser known parks tonight, despite the rough ground - good for ankle strengthening! I know both Alistair and I (Joanna [ed.]) got well licked by the cows - both the small and large ones, when putting out the controls. I hope you enjoyed the chance to enjoy a little bit of country in the middle of the city. Hamlins Hill is, I believe, the only hill in Auckland that is not a volcanic cone, and therefore has quite a different structure from the other hills, including Mt Richmond which was visited by the intrepid people tackling course 1 tonight.
I am sorry those of you who encountered an electric fence that was on tonight - we had been directed to a master switch which was supposed to have turned all fences off but for some unknown reason this obviously did not fully succeed.
Next week the event is again on TUESDAY night, 13th November, on one of the real favourite maps - Western Springs. At this time of the year there will be lots of baby birds of all descriptions around the lakes so the trip around the course with young children could be a long one! We are starting from the Stadium, at the end of Stadium Rd. There will be parking within the stadium grounds. Look forward to seeing you there! Next week will be the last of Tuesday events - the following week, 21st November, at Waiatarua Reserve, St Johns, we change to Wednesdays.

I do hope none of you took fright when the hail storms came through at 4.30 today - I must admit at that stage it did look as if it might be going to be a night only for the intrepid but it all passed by as quickly as it came and we were left with a lovely fine, sunny night for running around Western Springs. It was great to see such a good turnout, especially all the guides who were there tonight. We have certainly been in the midst of the wildlife in the last couple of weeks haven't we - last week it was very curious and friendly cows who found the control flags particularly tasty - this week it was masses of pukeko and geese with babies in tow - the loud hisses I received from the geese, protecting their young were much more fierce than the cows last week - Panda (the border collie club member!) who rather fancies rounding up the cows certainly decided that she was going to keep her distance from the geese tonight! Our thanks go to Simon, a first time setter, for the courses tonight, which were very much enjoyed by all, and to Dwayne for his assistance.
Next week we CHANGE TO WEDNESDAY - 21st November on Waiatarua Reserve, St Johns. The event centre will be at the end of Towle Pl, off Grand Drive. You will once again see plenty of birdlife in this lovely wetlands map.
Before next week, however there is a very special event that you can go along to this THURSDAY - the Great Ape Race at the Auckland Zoo! This is the now annual event to raise funds for orangutan conservation. It is an orienteering event with a difference, and a wonderful opportunity to have a fun time navigating around the zoo, in aid of a great cause. Do go along and support this event - for details see http://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/GreatApeRaceInfo.htm

Waiatarua really is a lovely park on a beautiful evening like tonight, isn't it - It becomes more attractive every time we visit as the bush is becoming more established. Much of it is now quite open inside and Scott took full advantage of this to get us into many little nooks and crannies that we have not visited before, even to the extent of finding a nicely constructed brush hut to use as a control site. As you headed out of the open into the vague bush areas you had to be very careful to know exactly where you went in or it became a real hunt. This meant using a few more orienteering skills than we often need to use in the parks where you can just run in the general direction because in the open you will be able to see the control without really navigating to it. I hope you all enjoyed the extra challenge.
We do now have a large supply of the brochures for this season's SummerNav so if you did not do so today please help yourself to as many as you can find homes for next time you are at an event. We would be delighted if you could take a bundle to hand out at work, school, the gym .... anywhere where you think there may be people interested.
Also, if after having come to a few events you now feel you would like to come regularly we are still selling season's tickets, or for non club members who would also like to join the club, the combos that cover both club membership and a SummerNav season's ticket. If you have already been to an event just tell us how many you have attended and we will subtract what you have already paid off the cost of the season's ticket.
Next week the event is again on WEDNESDAY, 28th November at Macleans Park, Eastern Beach. Registration will be in the park at the far end (eastern end) of Eastern Beach (the end of The Esplanade) We will be right beside the beach with an 8 o'clock full tide so make sure you put in your togs and enjoy a swim to freshen up after your run. It is also a lovely spot for a picnic so why not come prepared and make a lovely evening of it.

I am not sure how many people availed themselves of a freshen up in the tide after their run tonight - there was a wee bit of a nip in the wind, however it was once again a lovely evening for everyone to enjoy Kat's courses tonight. Kat was a first time setter but from all the comments from people on their return, you were provided with plenty of challenges. I do hope the course 1 and 2 runners enjoyed the fascinating little maze of tracks and roads on their road section and course one the wonderful view they were treated too. It was quite magic as we collected in the controls just on dusk, looking over the city framed by the dramatic sunset. It is a real bonus for those who stay around at the end, packing up and collecting controls as you get treated to the best views of the day.
It was lovely to see so many newcomers there tonight - we hope you all enjoyed it and look forward to seeing you back at another event soon.
Next week the event moves to THURSDAY, 6th December, at Ambury Regional Park, Mangere Bridge, again right on the waters edge, but this time on the Manukau harbour. It is at the end of Ambury Rd, starting from the car park beside the Park headquarters. If you really want to make a night if it you can even camp the night there! (just give the park rangers a call) This is another lovely place for a picnic at the end, with built in BBQ's for you to cook your dinner on. - You may need to protect your picnic for the many feathered friends who will come to visit you. Unfortunately as this is a farm park DOGS are NOT PERMITTED at this event.

After such a dramatic weather day in Auckland today we were incredibly lucky to have yet another lovely evening at Ambury Park tonight. As I walked back having collected a couple of controls, admiring the beautiful night I felt almost guilty that we were having a lovely time while others in the west of Auckland were spending the night in temporary housing after damage to their homes from the tornado. I do hope none of you suffered any injury or damage to your home.
Our thanks to Al and Sonja, again first time setters, ably guided by Imogene, for tonight's great courses with a variety of leg lengths and directions to keep us all on our toes. I certainly got caught out on one leg amongst the rocks! Course 1A was even treated to a run with Father Christmas at the Santa parade - we don't usually manage to throw in such entertainment along your way!
Next week SummerNav is again on THURSDAY, 13th December on the Panmure Basin map. The event centre will be beside the model trains at the end of Peterson Rd, off Waipuna Rd, beside Waipuna Lodge. This is the second to last event before our Christmas break, the final one for the year being the following Thursday, 20th.

It seems no time since we were preparing for the first of the SummerNav events for 2012-13 and already we are down to only one more event to go before Christmas! It was good to see a good number of you there tonight, despite the rather hectic Christmas Party week! It was also great to welcome several newcomers along. Panmure Basin is a lovely area to explore but a rather tricky map to set on with the narrow strip around a very large obstacle. Thanks to Alina and Irene for doing a great job tonight, and especially for the little sprint around the specially drawn map of the model railway area - it is amazing how you can be tripped up on a 1 km course! It was somewhat unfortunate for Alina to discover while putting out the controls that the main bridge over the river had been shut off in the last 24 hours, somewhat playing havoc with course 1 and 2. Apologies to anyone who decided they should not cross or who had a struggle to do so. It could not have been worse timing as far as our event was concerned.
Next week , for our finale before Christmas we are again on THURSDAY, 20th December on the Big King map, starting from the end of Graham Breed Drive, at the back of the car park behind the Three Kings shopping plaza. You can access from Mt Eden Rd, just down from the junction with Mt Albert Rd, or from Mt Albert Rd. Please drive in with care as there will be orienteers crossing across these roads. Permission to allow our courses to go onto Big King Reserve comes with the condition that no orienteers cross through the areas of obvious previous Maori occupancy. We have therefore marked as out of bounds the plateau areas where there are the series of small depression left from kumara pits. These will be marked on the map with red strip and you must avoid crossing through these areas or any other kumara pits you may encounter on the mountain. We will also be using free standing controls on the reserve which can be easily moved or knocked over, particularly on the slopes, so please make sure you leave them upright in their correct place so as not to spoil the event for those coming after you. Much negotiation has taken place to allow us to use any of the volcanic cones and permission for us to continue to do so is very dependent on us fulfilling the conditions of our permit.

A great night for orienteering - we hope you enjoyed the outing. As a Christmas present the organisers set the courses a little bit shorter than they told you about (but no lack of steep slopes!) so you have very fast times - hopefully you can go into the break in the SummerNav series with a good sense of achievement.
This was the event we had so much negotiation with the council over so we hope you enjoyed it. I suspect there were a number attending tonight to whom this was a first ever visit to this park.
The next event is on Tuesday the 22nd January at Unitec on the Carrington map. The map we are using the week after (Jan 29) has never been announced. We have been trying to get another Auckland volcanic cone but have eventually given up and we have organised to have the event at Churchill Park (in Glendowie). The start will be in Kinsale Ave. Please add it to your brochures, which at present says 'To be advised'.
We hope you have a great festive season and that next year is a really great one for you. Those competing in the pre-Oceania and the Oceania events at the end of the month and through January will have a great time - we wish you lots of success. Although the closing date for the pre Oceania events 28-31st Dec has passed, entries will be accepted on the day if you suddenly find you can get there. This could, however mean that you may not be able to run the course you want as there will be a limited number of extra maps printed. If you know you will be coming please still do send a late entry in as it will make it much easier for the organisers.
