It seems no time since we were preparing for the first of
the SummerNav
events for 2012-13 and already we are down to only one more event
to go before
Christmas! It was good to see a good number of you there tonight,
despite the
rather hectic Christmas Party week! It was also great to welcome
several
newcomers along. Panmure
Basin is a
lovely area to explore but a rather tricky map to set on with the
narrow strip
around a very large obstacle. Thanks to Alina and Irene for doing
a great job
tonight, and especially for the little sprint around the specially
drawn map of
the model railway area – it is amazing how you can be tripped up
on a 1 km
course! It was somewhat unfortunate for Alina to discover while putting out the
controls that the main
bridge over the river had been shut off in the last 24 hours,
somewhat playing
havoc with course 1 and 2. Apologies to anyone who decided they
should not
cross or who had a struggle to do so. It could not have been worse
timing as
far as our event was concerned.
Next week , for our finale before Christmas we are again
on THURSDAY,
20th December on the Big King map, starting from the end of Graham
Breed Drive,
at the back of the car park behind the Three Kings shopping plaza.
You can
access from Mt Eden Rd, just down from the junction with Mt Albert
Rd, or from
Mt Albert Rd. Please drive in with care as there will be
orienteers crossing
across these roads. Permission to allow our courses to go onto Big
King Reserve
comes with the condition that no orienteers cross through the
areas of obvious
previous Maori occupancy. We have therefore marked as out of
bounds the plateau
areas where there are the series of small depression left from
kumara pits.
These will be marked on the map with red strip and you must avoid
crossing
through these areas or any other kumara pits you may encounter on
the mountain.
We will also be using free standing controls on the reserve which
can be easily
moved or knocked over, particularly on the slopes, so please make
sure you
leave them upright in their correct place so as not to spoil the
event for
those coming after you. Much negotiation has taken place to allow
us to use any
of the volcanic cones and permission for us to continue to do so
is very
dependent on us fulfilling the conditions of our permit.
Reminder of other events
Don’t forget that there is a sprint race on this Sunday,
16 December in
the Botanic Gardens, Manurewa Access from the Everglades
Drive entrance to
the Gardens. Parking will be on the streets. There are 3
courses, with 2
races for each course. Both races for each course have to be
run between
1 pm and 3:30 pm. Start times will not be allocated.
The start
interval will be 1 minute. There is an entry form on the CMOC
website,
cmoc.co.nz. Cost is $10 for a senior and $5 for a junior.
While pre-entry
is preferred, to give an idea of map numbers to print, entry on
the day will be
accepted.
Pre entry for the Pre Oceania events 28th, 29th, 30th and
31st December
closes tomorrow. There will be 4 great events in the Auckland
region between
Christmas and New Year, put on as warm up events for a major
competition,
Oceania, including Worlds Cup events, which is being held in the
southern part
of the North Island in January. The Auckland events will consist
of a sprint
event on the Mt Roskill Schools map on the 28th, followed by
forest events in
the Woodhill region on the next 3 days. There will be courses
suitable for all
levels of experience and fitness. Go to http://www.aucklandorienteering.org.nz/pre-oceania2013/welcome/
for
details and to enter. Entries will be accepted on the day but
there can be
no guarantee of a map for the particular course you wish to do
being available
if you have not pre entered.
