What a beautiful evening for night orienteering and we were delighted with the numbers who turned up to make the most of it. Great to see some many new faces too. Taking on a night event as your first orienteering event is a good challenge! I think many people were surprised at how much more difficult it becomes in the dark, particularly for those of us who have been around for a bit longer. Both reading the map and judging your footing in the dark can be quite tricky but there were some great times done on all the courses. We have one more of these night events this season, on 7th March next year, at Ambury Park. There is camping available out there too so you can make a night of it by camping out afterwards which from experience is a very pleasant thing to do. Ambury is somewhat flatter under foot but still creates quite a challenge at night so make sure you mark this date on your calendar now and get in some new batteries - a few people suffered from fading lights last night.

Club members, these night events are warm ups for one of the club highlights of the year, which is the trip to Taupo to attend the interclub night relay champs – Katoa Po, on 14th March. Everyone camps out on a farm and the final leg runners finish in the small hours of the morning. There are prizes for the best club support, best theme etc as well as the coveted relay trophies for the winning 5 person and 7 person teams. The legs are of differing length and difficult so there is need for people of all ages and experience in the teams. This is a must to attend so make sure you keep 14th March free (and if you don’t belong to a club join one now so you can join in the fun!)
