Yet another lovely evening out at Lloyd Elsmore tonight – I do hope we manage to get through the whole of the SummerNav before this wonderful spell of evenings comes to an end, although we do need some good heavy rain during the nights for the farmers, gardens and so that the pine forests open! Lloyd Elsmore certainly is a hive of industry on a night like this, isn’t it with every sport imaginable taking place. It is really great to see so many people out doing things. Watching the little children on the exciting new BMX track was really fascinating - New Zealand’s future Sarah Walkers! It was good to see quite a few people tackle the memory course tonight and many others show an interest to try one in the future. A memory course certainly makes you focus on the main features on the map to get you to the right area and then the fine detail of where you will find the control. These are skills that become really important for orienteering in the forest. If you want to improve your skills then give it a go next time a memory course is on offer. Next week SummerNav moves to THURSDAY, 7th March at Craigavon Park, Green Bay. The event centre is in the parking area off Connaught St, just down from the junction with Portage Rd.
A Series Sunday 3rd March, Kiwitahi –on the other side of SH16 from Woodhill Forest, before Helensville. The event is at Alf's Access Rd which is off Kiwitahi Rd which is the next road on the right off SH16 past the Restall Rd entrance to Woodhill Forest. Sign posting will begin from this point. Start times are between 10 am and 12.30 pm with course closure at 2 pm. There will be 7 courses with 4 red courses, 1 orange, 1 yellow and 1 white course, so catering for absolute beginners to experienced orienteers. If anyone wishes to try a course, and wants to go out again the second run is free. The terrain is on privately owned land with a mixture of farmland and open pines, and absolutely NO DOGS are allowed, and of course, no smoking.
The second and final of the SummerNav NIGHT events will be on Saturday night, 9th March at Ambury Park. Starts for children from dusk (about 8.15) and others once it is dark (about 8.45) till about 9.30. Come out early and enjoy a picnic or BBQ dinner in these lovely surrounding while you watch the sun set across the water. You can even camp the night. I can recommend this as a great thing to do – it is a lovely to wake in the morning to the sound of all the birds. You feel you are really out in the wilds while in fact only being a short distance from home. Ring the park rangers to make a booking.
Last Saturday night we held the first of two night SummerNav events – this one at Hobsonville. Again a beautiful evening and a large crowd enjoyed a really fun evening. We were delighted to be inviuted to use this area by the Hobsonville Land Company. Kathleen Waldock at Hobsonville Land Company is looking for any photos taken at the event that could be used on their web site or Facebook page.
