Well that was some work out Simon gave everyone tonight, wasn’t it! Mangere Mountain can always be guaranteed to make you feel you have earned your dinner and the rest at the top while you admire the view but a combination of longer lengths and early darkness unfortunately caught many folk out tonight, preventing them from having time to finish their course. Well done to those that managed and apologies to those who found that it had become too dark to read the map to finish. There were a few injuries tonight with people having trouble in the dusk or on the slopes made a bit more slippery with the recent rain. I do hope you all make a very speedy recovery. Course 3 was a particularly challenging one tonight, ideal for those of you getting ready to move up to course 2 but quite some challenge for those of you with less experience. Don’t be disheartened if you had your troubles – it was hard so you did well if you managed most of it.
I guess these cooler nights are a reminder to us the summer is nearly gone – there is only one more week before the end of daylight saving and hence the end of the Summer Series for yet another year. The final event for the season will be next Thursday, 16th March on One Tree Hill. Registration will be in Haydn Ave, off Manukau Rd, with the start/finish area in the park, just across from the observatory. There will be a contours only course for those of you wanting a bit more of an orienteering challenge, as well as the normal 4 courses – rather shorter than this week to ensure you are not caught out by lack of light.
We look forward to a great turn out for this final event on the favourite park of them all.
Although the Summer Series is ending there is plenty of orienteering to come. There are 5 more Forest Summer Series events to come on Sundays over the next few months, the next on Sunday 19th after Round the Bays with starts from 11am until 2pm to allow extra time to get there. There will be coaching offered to all newcomers before you go out, as well as a training session starting at 2pm, suitable for both new and experienced. As well as these forest events we have plans for 2 short series of week night street events over winter – in May and September, as well as a series of Park Sprint races on Saturday afternoons in July/August.
Plenty to keep us in shape over winter!!
Below are the results from the CM event in Waiuku last Sunday, plus the night event on Tuesday (we all had fun despite the rain!). I am sorry we forgot to include the results from the first forest event last week. Results can be found on the AOC website at www.orienteeringauckland.org.nz
Secondary School competitors – a reminder that with the Auckland Champs and the NZSS Nationals approaching there are areas of Woodhill now embargoed to you. These areas are Celebre, Wiggles and Whose Game. Do hope you are all training hard with the Nationals in Auckland this year.
All the best for all of you heading down to Taupo for the club Night Relay Champs this weekend – have a great time. Go AOC!!
