Hamlins Hill 8th November Thanks to Roger and Craig for the courses tonight. Setters Comments Thanks for coming along to Hamlins Hill and for all your positive feedback and suggestions from those of you who I met on the night. I was very impressed with the path made through the long grass near the old tank in the bush area when I collected the control – it looked like the result of a lot of fun going through the clearing. Huge thanks to everyone who helped. Great to hear many of you planning to come along to the next event - see you on the course! Cheers, Roger Controllers comments The evening proved to be quite pleasant. While placing controls out a large black cloud was inching its way over the city. I feared that we may have had a rain affected event. This was not the case and so the turn out was great to see. Competitors were full of praise for the courses that they had run on. A couple of problems were high lighted as the event progressed. A control on course 3 was in the wrong place, it was about 20m down from the position it should have been. I had placed it in a similar but unmarked feature. One competitor identified the error and placed the control into the correct position. The course 1 length quoted was 7 km where as in reality it was 8.3km. Most on course 1commented it seemed a to take a long time for the distance! Now that I am aware of this problem with distances when you overlay 2 maps onto a larger one, I will get it right next time.Course 1 and 2 had a control where there was no feature displayed in the circle. Most people found the depression as described. Sorry about that. Mt Richmond proved to be a pleasant location to visit with its complex volcanic features. Hamlin's Hill is not volcanic so it lacks those types of exciting control locations but still has the pleasant views. Quite a few new comers came and had a go at course 3. I hope that you all enjoyed this experience and that for the adventure racers amongst this group, you come to a few more summer series events to build up your navigation skills. Navigating in the parks is quite straight forward and I would highly recommend that you consider attending the summer forest series events that are scheduled on Sundays in the New Year. I would like to thank Roger Woodroofe for setting this event. We had a few problems with preparing the map, with a few long hours involved. I am sure Roger has gained an invaluable insight in how setters set courses that are as interesting as possible with route choice and general interest for the competitor. I trust the setter and controller next week will give you all a great run for your money as they have double the size of park and volcano cone to play with. Craig Auckland Club Relays. Club members, don’t forget the club relay weekend THIS WEEKEND at Tawharanui. Relays Sunday, but come up and camp overnight. Just enjoy the beach or have some club challenges of cricket? Petanque? Sand castles?? Share a barbeque and then the energetic ones can go and do a short night Rogaine before a nights sleep to be ready for the relay. We have plenty of sites booked so just turn up when you are ready. See the magazine for relay details. Non club members – if you felt like joining in I am sure there will be some maps to spare. Next week we are at the ‘Queen’ of our park maps – One Tree Hill. Please note, this year we are starting for the first time from the edge of the park at the end of Claude Rd, off Manukau Rd beside the old National Women’s Hospital. Ie you do NOT go into the One Tree Hill or Cornwall park areas to find the event centre. There should be parking along Claude Rd or its side roads. For those of you who are finding it too easy your course setter has planned to add a little spice by providing you with a memory course option – all we give you is a clip card and at each control there is a small piece of map that you study and memorise where to go to find the next control – great practice for route planning!
