A Very Happy New Year to all our Chinese orienteers.
Did you have a swim? We didn’t but would have loved to. We know a lot did – hope you enjoyed it after a warm run around the hills of the region. The sea certainly looked wonderful – it was a great sight looking from the map back to the campermatic and the blue sea behind and then out on to the islands of the gulf – what a beautiful harbour Auckland has. A number of people mentioned that they’d never discovered this part of Auckland before. It is one of the positives of orienteering – you end up going to place you would never otherwise go – and often they are just wonderful. Quite a number of those here tonight had traveled from quite some distance – Kumeu and beyond, Whangaparaoa , a couple from Bennydale too – know where that is?? – we hope you enjoyed your evening in this rather pleasant part of town. We do appreciate you coming so far.
The courses were challenging too - especially around those tricky school buildings and in the dark green valleys. Thanks to Renee Brocas and controller Dave Stewart for the effort they put into preparing tonight’s event. It was great to have many local residents coming down to try orienteering. Renee, a teacher in the area, had distributed a very large number of brochures and this encouraged many locals to give orienteering a try. We look forward to seeing you at future events. I often wonder what the local residents think on the night of our events, when a quiet neighbourhood suddenly springs to life. Tonight you must have all succeeded in looking as if you were enjoying yourselves as we had lots of folk drop by to find out what we were all doing.
You will notice school names appearing by some competitors names. This event was part of the school series which is just getting underway for 2005. You’ll see more and more school orienteers over the next few weeks. Speak to John Robinson if you want to know more about the school series. Best wishes to all the school teams.
DON”T FORGET THIS THURSDAY NIGHT. We have the first of our two night events. Something not to be missed! It is at Craigavon Park – just about the opposite side of town form Macleans. Craigavon Park is between Blockhouse Bay and Green Bay. The event centre is Connaught St. Given when it is getting dark at the moment it might be nearly 9pm before the course 1 and 2 runners start. If you are a novice you can always start earlier – we’ll be set up to go from 8:15pm. A light source is a must. A head lamp is great but an ordinary torch works very well – make sure the batteries are fresh – the better the light the easier it is. See you there!!
NEXT WEEK (Tuesday 15th) we are at Western Springs – by that well known stadium (in Stadium Rd). Please bring your mufflers as we’d better be careful we keep the noise to under 85dB. This is one of the prettiest parks in Auckland and there is a good navigational challenge finding your way round all those little lakes. A good grunt up a hill or two for the longer courses too and the opportunity to see and elephant or two if you get lost!!!
Having now mastered park orienteering (including, hopefully a night event this week), we are now getting geared up for a move out into the forest on Sunday mornings. This year we have a four event SUMMER FOREST SERIES starting on 20th February, with the second the following Sunday, on the 27th. Both these events are in Woodhill Forest, on the West coast, north of Kumeu. MARK THESE DATES ON YOUR CALENDAR NOW!! These events are just as relaxed and enjoyable as the park events – the only difference being a change of day and a few more trees around. It is lovely under the canopy of the trees on these hot summers days, and you will find a course every bit as suitable for you, whatever you want to do. To ensure we meet all needs there will be a couple more courses, but the same faces will be at registration to guide you as to which course to choose. As we are in a less public area, we can use our electronic timing, instead of clip cards, so you will have the fun of hearing a little beep each time you dip your e card at a control, and getting a printout of you split times when you finish. Because we a sure that those of you who have not yet tried orienteering in the forest will love it once you have tried, we now have some vouchers available for first time forest orienteers. Ask for one on Thursday night, or at the event next Tuesday. This will give you a completely FREE RUN at one of the Summer Forest Series events – including the hire of your e card. Normal costs for non members are $10 adult, $5 student, $20 family maximum, plus $3/person e card hire (or you can buy one for $50) (members $8, $4, $16). Starts 10.00am to 12.30pm.
