Fast running tonight? This area has just been re-organised by the City Council and it is a very pleasant place to go. The planning of courses worked mainly on route choice legs as the control sites are generally fairly straight forward. Hence it was courses that suited the faster runners. The rain in the last couple of days certainly changed the place. While preparing for the event it was very, very dry and so it was a surprise today to find some control sites under water and a very small creek flowing like a river. Added to the interest though.
Thanks very much to Toby Scott for setting todays event. Toby is a fast up and coming junior who did a great job. He is off next week to the junior camp mentioned below.
As Christmas comes near and you start thinking about a nice place out for a meal – think of our sponsor/supporter Thai Torbay Restaurant (473 1674). They have very nice surrounds and lovely meals. We know, we’ve been and had a most enjoyable meal. Not too expensive either. We recommend you drive through Torbay (to get the nice view of the sea and beach) and then to the restaurant at the top of the hill in the shopping centre.
Next week is the last of the pre-Christmas summer series events. It will be different too. Many of the top juniors in the country are in Auckland this coming week for a training camp and they are coming along to take part in the sprint event. It’ll be great to watch them speed round their course – then you can have a go too. Come and do your usual course and then have a go at the special sprint course. We have our electronic timing system in action too. This is fun. Come and have a go. (If you own an e-card bring it along but if you don’t you can borrow one of our set.)
All this activity is on the Carrington map (Unitec). Enter through gate 3 on Carrington Rd and it’s only a short drive to the event centre. This is on Thursday the 15th December.
Carrington is a really great map with a maze of buildings that may look easy but can be guaranteed to cause confusion. The map has also been remapped to IOF sprint map symbols so is brand new for this Summer Series – it looks very different from the old one. We will gradually try and upgrade all our summer series maps to these symbols (today’s map was too but it was not quite as obvious on an open park map). Make sure you don’t miss this last opportunity to get in some exercise orienteering before all that Christmas food!!
There is a mountain bike rogaine on this Saturday in the Makarau (north of Kaukapakapa) region. Both a 3 and a 6 hour rogaine are available. Entries closed last weekend but a call to Thomas Reynolds (09 4117680) may get you a ride. Teams must consist of at least two riders. This is late notice and so we don’t guarantee an entry but if you are keen give Thomas a call. The entry form says that people entering late must provide their own map.
