Don’t forget the NIGHT EVENT this THURSDAY, 8th plus the FINAL Summer Series OTH, next Thursday – details below
Some comments from your course setter – thanks, Robert and Ian, for such fun and challenging courses!
Another day, another beautiful evening for a Summer Series event. Despite following closely on the heels of the night event at Ambury, the turnout this evening was excellent, with additional maps being printed mid event! A year or two ago, NZ got caught up in a big debate about the Foreshore, I thought it would be good for us to have our own Orienteering version of a Foreshore debate.
One thing that could be said of this evening’s event was that it was a bit different. The Ambury map (and the nearby Mangere Mountain map) allows a bit more challenging courses to be set than some of the other Summer Series Events. And as someone had timed the event to coincide with low tide, it would have been rude not to have taken advantage of the opportunity to provide some ‘route choices’ that made you think.
Waiting at the finish as you all came back, I must say that I did get some dirty looks, but most of them seemed to have a smile underneath them. The course 4 people got to look at the fun, and Mangere Harbour in all its glory. The rest of you got to visit it. Apologies for those on Courses 2&3 that found the mud a bit much, but there were routes to the controls avoiding most of it. On the whole people seemed to enjoy it, certainly going by some of the shrieks coming from the foreshore.
No apologies whatsoever to C1s who had the choice of two course lengths, with lots of route choices throughout the street and Mountain sections. You got to do all the grunty stuff first and then take a dip at the end! And yes, when it says ‘Fence, West end, North side’ that is exactly what it means. If pushed, there is a small, tiny apology for a slightly, marginally misplaced control on Mangere Mt, which we hope did not put you off your stride too much.
All our thanks must go to those that help out making these events possible for all of us - you know who you all are - and anyone else able to help in future events, step right up. On a personal note, I find course setting a fantastic way to get you ‘thinking orienteering’ and the experience definitely helps when you are out there at an event looking at a map.
Only a few more Summer Series events to go now, so wash off your shoes and we’ll see you out there again.
We promised you Robert had something different planned for you – was anyone else brave enough to call into a shop on the way home? – The assistant certainly gave us a sideways glance as the smell of stagnant mud came through the door!!
This Thursday is time to get those torches out again and head for Craigavon Park, Connaught St Blockhouse Bay (the car park just down from the Portage Rd intersection) for the final real night event – starts from dusk for youngsters (about 8.30?) and from dark for others (9ish). If you haven’t tried a night event, do come and give this a go – they are great fun.
Then next week sees the final of the Summer Series for 2006-2007 at One Tree Hill on THURSDSAY, 15th March. Don’t miss this last chance for the season on the favourite of all the park maps (our only visit there this season). The event centre will be in Haydn Ave, off Manukau Rd, on the east border of the park. Bring a picnic and make the most of one of the last evenings before daylight saving ends at the weekend.
For those heading for the Katoa Po night relays at Taupo this weekend, go well and have fun!
