What a fantastic end to the Summer Series for 2007-2008 – our 20th year!! You all kept us very much on our toes tonight, printing out extra maps, talking to new folk, printing extra copies of the city Winter Programme…. But we loved every minute of it – thanks for turning up in such great numbers and for making it such a cheery evening and thanks also to a very new course setter tonight, Ian, and to Roger for his guidance. Ian was new to orienteering at the beginning of this season’s Summer series and ended the season by setting great courses for you all! Who wants to put up their hand to set one of next season’s events??
For those of you not at the event tonight, as well as the programme of weekend forest events which is on the AOC website, there is now a programme of City Winter events – kicking off in 4 weeks time on 30th April! This is the first series of night street events (bring a torch!!), culminating in a mini Rogaine on the 4th night. Then starting at the end of July there is a series of sprint events on Saturday afternoons – a short event – 3 courses from about 1.5 to just over 3 km, great to do as a quick sprint if you are a keen runner, but equally suitable to do at a more leisurely speed. The last of these sprint events will be the Auckland Sprint Champs. Finishing off the winter events is another series of night street events in August/September, again culminating in a mini Rogaine. So even if you are not able to join us in the Forest on Sundays, we certainly hope to see you all at some events between now and the start of the next Summer Series. More details of all these events will be sent closer to the time.
Mean time, This Sunday, 6th April there is the double billing of a score event in the morning and a mountain bike orienteering event in the afternoon, being put on by the NW club on Rob and Marquita’s farm, 45 Slater Rd, South Head, signposted from the roundabout between Helensville and Parakai – this promises to be a fun event so do come along.
The score event will mass start at 11 am and last 1 hour with a big variety of controls, some in farmland and some in forest, with many suitable for newcomers. Please arrive before 10.30 am.
The Mountain bike Orienteering will start at 1.30 with 3 courses on offer, including a short 7 km course designed to suit first timers. Any type of mountain bike will do, and people can go in pairs if they wish. All controls are on tracks or close to fences if on farmland, and it will be the first time in Auckland we have used farmland for MTBO. If a mapboard is required and it is useful to have one, email Di Michels at dianne@michels.co.nz to order one but be quick as there are limited supplies.
There will be plenty of macadamia nuts for spot prizes at the finish of both events!!!!
The following Sunday, 13th April is the second of the OY events being held on the coastal strip of Woodhill forest, access off SH16 on Restall Rd, the forest headquarters road. This is truly a superb area to orienteer on and you can picnic on the beach at the end!! Starts are any time between 10.00am and 12.30 with a course of a suitable length and difficulty for all, starting from a string course for pre schoolers, then a course with a control at every decision point for young children, on up to a course guaranteed to be long and hard enough to keep any of you well occupied!! Everyone is very welcome indeed at these events and if you are new to forest orienteering we will be delighted to have a chat to you before you start. These forest events use electronic timing but SI cards can be hired for $3 or if you are going to come to a few, you can buy one at the event for $50.
Comments from todays setter:
Thanks very much to everybody that gave feedback on the various courses tonight - it was greatly appreciated by a newbie course setter! I hope you all enjoyed the courses.
Apologies to anyone who experienced a hiccup with a couple of controls tonight. Control XB on the west side of the museum had to be moved during the event after concern for the recently mown new grass on the bank. Someone also decided that control XJ (marked as a tree) beside the lake was a bit too easy, and throwing it into the pond would make a far better challenge. Sadly it was too late to change the description to "In pond - bring snorkel and togs" - hopefully this did not affect too many of you. Thanks very much to those of you that reported those issues!
Thanks must also go to Roger for being a newbie controller for tonights event, Alistair and Joanna for their course setting wisdom, running the registration and printing extra maps, Selwyn for all the mapping changes, and to Alistair, Craig, Raewyn and Katherine for helping bring in the controls. Thanks also to Natalie for handing out the sweets at the end of the event!
