Next week, on Wednesday the 1st of December, the event is in Auckland Domain starting at the band rotunda. See you there.
It was great to be back with you this week but it wasn’t as warm, or relaxing, as it was for us last week. We were sitting back watching the sun setting, hoping a whale might pass by, while you were dashing all over the place. We were at a lovely resort (Popao) in Vava’u, the northern island group of Tonga (www.popao.com if you are looking for a lazy holiday – we can very strongly recommend this place and especially Lisa cooking – a real treat). Snorkelling by day and relaxing and fine food makes a real treat. Only a few contours in sight and not a fence to cross. Who's turn is it next?? |
The new AOC campermatic made it's first appearance tonight. Just before it is
off for it's final preparation.
Controllers Report (Craig Pearce)
The Ellerslie racecourse map this year proved to be quite challenging for a number of reasons. Competitors clearly were not expecting a line course, which obviously caused the runners of course 1 to have to think about what they were doing. This fact clearly slowed the winning time from what would have otherwise been expected from a 10 km run. The second change or difference from earlier summer series events was that the map was premarked. Vee Smirnov the setter is an experienced operator of Ocad and is able to produce maps as required. He has the skills to create maps from scratch, rather that just placing course marking on an existing map. Course 1 runners benefited from this as the Michael's Ave map was produced especially for this event at short notice. He was able to produce an upgraded map which was not only premarked but which had all the control descriptions on it as well.
The line course in course 1 proved very challenging based on the comments from runners. The line course meant that runners had to be continuously aware of their current position and be on the lookout for controls that could have been anywhere on the line that they were following. Reports suggest that runners looked very serious while they concentrated on following this line. I'm pleased to say that the feedback was generally favourable with this line course. A line course is probably not likely to be repeated in the summer series this summer. Course 1 also had to contend with a missing control in the Michael's Ave area of the map, it was not where I placed it when I went to collect it. This probably only disadvantaged later runners, a timely reminder that the summer series takes place in public parks.
The feedback regarding course 2 was generally favourable, the only comment was that one of the gates that we had expected to be open was not, and so people were choosing to jump over the fence. This is not a desirable situation, but we're at the mercy of the landowner as to whether gates are open or locked based on our request for access. The possibility of Gates not being open was considered for courses 3 and 4 and changes made for this eventuality. Just as well as this would have caused us some major problems on the day had we not done this.
The number of controls placed out at tonight's event was larger than most other events. Normally you do not need to use 2 cards at a summer series but due to the relatively close and intricate nature of the race course, there was plenty of opportunity to place controls in interesting places. I hope that everyone found that their experience at Ellerslie tonight was enhanced by the number of controls needed to be found, rather than having to run long legs.
The forecasts suggested that the weather would be poor for this evening; I'm pleased that the weather turned out to be quite excellent in fact. No doubt this would account for an excellent turn out this evening. I was worried for a while that I had not printed enough maps but this fear proved unfounded.
I hope to see you all next week in the Auckland domain, where I hope to run an interesting course. I leave this challenge up to the setter and controller, Malcolm and Pete.
