It’s a lovely place, is Ambury, and the weather turned out perfect – just a little rain as we were setting up. How many of you said hullo to Cameron (isn’t he tall!) or had a scratch of the pig’s head – it sends him into ecstasy!! Thanks very much to first time setter, Gus Grey and Jeff Greenwood for the planning and setting for today – the courses were great and very much enjoyed. We were delighted to welcome Norman Harris to our event today. Norman is an ex New Zealander, now living in Britain who many of you may know from his athletic past, particularly his books on New Zealand athletes. He is now a stalwart of orienteering in Britain.
Those of you at the event today will have seen a ‘Specials’ board displayed. If you have been thinking you should join the club as you really would like to continue orienteering, now is the very best time to do so – anyone joining now will be entitled to free runs at the remainder of the Summer series events – forms available on our website or at any event - $65 senior, $40 junior, $90 family – includes both the National and Auckland magazines. If you have joined the club during the Summer Series remind us and you will also run the remaining events free, or if you have bought a seasons ticket we will offer you a reduction on club membership.
The entries for the Nationals in Hawkes Bay at Easter close next Monday – those planning on going had better ensure you have your entry in. Good luck to those running in the Kaweka Challenge this weekend (the highest mountain marathon in NZ) – we hope the weather is just what you want.
This Sunday (27th Feb) we have Summer Forest Series 2. This is being held on the Hobbit Woods map – a map of the narrow strip of beautiful forest between Coast Rd and the coast in Woodhill Forest. Enter the forest via Restall Rd (the Forest Headquarters entrance – the old headquarters as they’ve shifted to Orewa) and go up the hill and on to the manned gate. The gate will be manned from 9.15 till 3pm. There are quite a few kilometres to drive in the forest. There will be road signs from Waimauku right to the event. The format and costs will be the same as last week – see results from last Tuesday for details. Sport Ident timing will again be used, so don’t forget your e card if you have one. If not they can be hired for $3 or bought for $50. Again there will be a course to suit all, from the novice Orienteer, new to the forest, through to those wanting to get some training in for the Nationals. First timers, your vouchers collected at the Summer Series can be used at this event, or at one of the other 2 events still to come in March and April.
The other event which you must mark on your calendar is the second night event, to be held back where we were tonight, Ambury Park, on Saturday 5th March. If you want to make an outing of it you can camp in the reserve by phoning the ARA (3662000 then 2) and making a reservation - $10 for 2 people. We did so after the event last year and really enjoyed it – it was beautiful waking to the early morning out there. We have our site booked again for this year and would welcome some company – last year we shared the whole park only with the animals! We are delighted to tell you that we have two great spot prizes to be offered to those who compete in these night events. Bivouac Outdoors have very generously donated a headlamp to be won by one lucky competitor. As well as this, Thai Torbay Restaurant has most generously donated a voucher to the value of $60 for a meal at the Restaurant – see the advert on the results page on our website. These prizes will be drawn from those entered in the results of Craigavon and Ambury. Please do support these two generous sponsors (and tell them you are an orienteer when you do).
Next week the event is again on Wednesday, back at the ever favourite map – the Auckland Domain, starting from the Grandstand – you can park on either side of it. We are on the count down now – only 3 park events left, so don’t put off coming or you will find the summer gone and a long wait through winter before these events start up again!
