Night event 20th February
Ambury Park
What a dreamy night to be outside in lovely Ambury Park! We were only sad we had
not got into gear to camp the night there. With a lovely sunset followed by a
clear starlit sky you barely needed a torch (just as well for those of you who
returned with barely a glow!). After you had all gone and we were collecting in
the controls a beautiful orange moon appeared on the horizon, just to make the
night perfect. It was great to see so many of you coming to give this new
challenge a go we do hope those of you who were practicing for your 100k walk
around Taupo got some good experience of navigating over farmland in the dark.
Our thanks to Tim and David for the courses, and a special thanks to the ARC staff who so kindly moved stock so that you would not be concerned about them and even turned the electric fences off for you. We had not asked them to do this so it was a real bonus when they volunteered to do so. Our sympathy to the friend of one of the rangers who went out to give the course a go and badly hurt his ankle while crossing a fence we wish him a speedy recovery.
Next event the first of the SUMMER FOREST EVENTS, this Sunday, 26th February, Woodhill forest. Access via Rimmer Rd off SH16, about 15 minutes north of Waimauku. Travel to the end of the NW motorway, head through Kumeu, past the Forest Headquarters access (Restall Rd) and on to Rimmer Rd (about 5 minutes short of the Parakai roundabout) Starts from 10.00 to 12.30. Course closure 2.30pm. You have to pass through a manned gate where you will need to complete a waiver form to take your car into the forest. This gate will be open from 9.30.
There is still a possibility that CHH could close the forest because of fire danger. In this case we will have a notice on the web page and will send out an email please check one of these at the weekend.
Costs Non members adult $10, student $5, family $20 (plus
$3 e card hire per person), members $8, $4, $16. This event, as with all the
forest events, will use the Sport Ident timing system. If you do not own an e
card they need to be hired at $3 per person, (10 year olds and under free), or
bought at $50. This timing system is our way of knowing you are all back safely
from your run YOU MUST PASS THROUGH THE FINISH even if you have not completed
the course otherwise we will mount a search party for you at the end of the
event.
First time forest orienteers, make sure you bring your voucher from the Summer
Series for a free run. If you cant make it to this event you can use it at one
of the other AOC summer forest events.
These forest events are suitable for EVERYONE novices through to competitive orienteers getting into training for the Nationals. There will be 7 courses of varying length and difficulty. There will also be a string course! If you dont know what is suitable for you, please ask. If you are a new comer to the forest it is best to try an easier course first (there is a long easy course specially for beginners who dont want to only do a few km) you can always go out again on a more difficult course once you have got the feel of a forest map.
If you are not fully confident about orienteering in the forest make sure you ask at the campermatic for some help. There will be experienced club members on hand to talk to you about what to do. Also, you may like to go and do a few controls with someone who can talk you through what they are doing before you do your own course.
At 1.15 there will be a training exercise organised for anyone interested (both beginners and those wanting to improve their skill) Put your name down at registration before your run if you are interested or gather by registration after you run, about 1.15.
Next Summer Series Park event WEDNESDAY, 1st March, Stadium Rd, Western Springs there will be parking available in the Western Springs stadium car park. Only 3 more Summer Series events to come so make sure you come along!
