Pretty nearly the perfect day for orienteering at the beach, warm but not hot, a breeze but not windy and partial cloud cover.
Mervyn and I were pleased with the results, which had winning times close to our expected win times and the beginners on courses 5 and 6 had a high rate of successful completion of their course. We hope you enjoyed yourselves, we enjoyed hearing people talk about their course and the technical feedback received.
The Pot Luck map provides a variety of visibility and runnability even though it is nearly all white and we planned courses to give you the experience of having to change your techniques for changing conditions in the detailed sand-dune terrain. Our biggest problem was with two "tracks" that had sections that were sometimes visible, indistinct or had disappeared altogether, so we removed them.
The experiment of printing all the controls for courses 4-6 on the same map was unsuccessful. The close clustering of some of their controls made it difficult for some to read the map and I think that it would be better to have them with separate maps. I have to own up to being the instigator.
The replacement of control 153 with 185 on course 3 resulted from my eventual realisation that it was a bingo control.
Finding the start proved a problem for some. Two experienced orienteers, who shall remain nameless and whose names I can no longer recall, asked for directions to the start even though it was marked on the map. Lost in the car park and unable to relocate!

Thanks very much to John Powell and Mervyn Paitry for setting excellent courses today. Everyone I heard speaking about the forest were delighted to be in a lovely bit of forest. The most exciting part of day for the Auckland Club was the finding of one of the controls lost on the first use of Sportident two years ago. Tony Cooper found it deep in a dense part of the forest - we are absolutely delighted to have this control and SI box back. The Club has spent may hours looking for it and the two others lost on the same day - (the only bad day we've had in two years).
The another delightful aspect of the day was seeing you summer series orienteers having a go in the lovely forest. We hope you really enjoyed the experience and will come back to the other upcoming events. Remember there is another event next Sunday - not very far from where we were today - although we enter the forest at the Headquarters and not at Rimmer Rd. See you this Wednesday at Ambury Park and then again in Woodhill Forest next Sunday.
