My apologies to the
competitor(s) who suffered very long times or obtained “dnf” results
due to long lengths in Red 1 to 4 courses. I would like to let you know from my perspective that it was a difficult creative course setting along the coastal strip – it was NOT my idea of doing course setting as I originally wanted to do the bulk of course setting in the forest block as well some of the coastal strip. But I was unable to do so due to the restrictions of non-availability of the forest block due to a 4WD issues. So please accept my apologies again for your “misery”. |

With the loss of most of
the Pot luck map at very short notice we were faced with a tough
choice. The only solution was to go along the coastal strip. On
reflection this caused two ironic situations to occur. Firstly due to
needing to be in the forest to reset the courses for the 4th time I did
not attend the previous OY. If I had I would have known that the course
lengths we set were too tough for the terrain. The 2nd one is that we
would not have gone as far up the coastal strip as we did. Why is this
ironic? Because we found that most of the control sites we wanted to
use already had controls sitting there when we got to them. Some Course
Red 1 runners may have had a bit of déjà vu from the last
OY. I was surprised at the range of responses we received from finishers, some really enjoyed the challenge and some were less than happy and were happy to tell me so. I have taken a number of lessons from this event which I hope will improve future events I control. The initial feedback from our waterproof paper experiment has been favourable. I would still like to see it used on a rainy day just to make sure. Blood, sweat, and tears, along with sand and wind have not caused any problems. The paper has also received favourable comments as to its foldability. Expect to see more maps without plastic bags at bigger events. |
