Those buildings are tricky, aren’t they!! The constant comment heard as people came in from their courses was that they had no trouble in the parks or up on the mountain but they got amazingly confused among the buildings – they all looked the same!! I think one of the main problems is that it looks as if it should be simple so it is very easy to stop concentrating for a minute – fatal!! Relocating in the middle of lots of black boxes is quite a challenge. Hannah Linkhorn had done a really good job in setting challenging legs which kept you all thinking. Unfortunately she could not be there at the time you were all coming in to hear the complimentary comments about her courses, or have the satisfaction of knowing she had succeeded in making even some seasoned orienteers have a slip up. Thanks Hannah – yet another set of great courses set by a junior orienteer.
Great to see the continuing arrival of new faces, and the reappearance of those new earlier in the season. It is also a particular delight to see so many young people out taking on long and challenging course for their age. This bodes well for the future of orienteering in the country.
Have you all got out your torches or headlamps and tested their batteries?? Next week sees not one but TWO events. The first is our regular event, on Tuesday, on the Macleans map, starting from Eastern Beach Reserve at the end of the Esplanade, approached down Eastern Beach Rd. We have not started out here for a few years, so come out and enjoy some lovely coastal views. Bring your togs for a dip to freshen up afterwards (it is a 7.45pm high tide) and enjoy a picnic on the beach. – What could be a better way of finishing a summers day?? Then just to make sure you have something to do later in the week, on Thursday we have the first of our 2 real NIGHT events this summer series. This event is at Craigavon Park, Blockhouse Bay, with youngsters able to start from dusk (about 8.15) and others once darkness settles in (about 8.45?). Last start will be about 9.30, depending on numbers. There will be 3 courses, about the lengths of courses 2, 3 and 4 as it take a bit longer in the dark and we want the winning times to be a bit shorter than for the ordinary events. If you haven’t tried orienteering in the dark before, then now is your chance – you will love it!! Also it’s a chance to get in some practice if you are an adventure racer. The second of these night events is on Saturday, 5th March at Ambury Park – there may even be a little something for the winners of these 2 events combined.
So – see you at Eastern Beach next Tuesday (5.30 onwards) and Craigavon Park next Thursday (8.15 onwards)
