Whoowee!!! That was quite some night! Certainly a record turn out for this season, ever for Western Springs and very nearly for any summer series event for all time. I think only one night at the Domain a few years ago rivalled it. You certainly are all determined to make every use of the beautiful fine evenings we are getting at the moment – makes up for the somewhat unsummery Christmas break, doesn’t it!
Thanks to Mark Wilson and Guy Cory-Wright for the great set of courses – it really makes the effort worthwhile when people come back with positive comments. A few of you found course 2 a bit more of a challenge tonight – most delighted in this but a few found it a bit more than they wanted. We attempt to set both course 1 and 2 at the same degree of difficulty, which as hard as we can do, orienteeringwise, in a park. For most maps this can not be too tricky, but some offer a bit more of a challenge. When you are in a small, fairly straightforward park like Macleans was last week, with some streets added to give distance for longer courses, the only real orienteering challenge will be some route choice legs, and the pleasure comes from the great views. In an area like Western Springs things are very much more complex and the courses always are deceptively difficult. If you are relatively new to the sport and don’t yet want too much of a challenge, feel free to discuss which course you would enjoy most with us at registration - we will have a fairly good idea as to whether the particular map will offer more of an orienteering challenge or not.
Tonight the Western Springs Stadium folk very kindly let us use their area for parking – a saviour - we used over 150 of their car parks! Unfortunately we had to stretch their kindness rather as we were somewhat late getting all the cars out of this area so the gates could be locked. Most of the parks we start in have gates that get locked between 8.00 and 9.00pm. If you are arriving late or plan to sit around afterwards, perhaps you could look for a park on the outside of the gates, or shift you car out when you first finish to ensure you don’t end up locked in – this will apply at Ambury next week, and at One Tree Hill on the last night.
Found – a set of keys handed to us by the touch rugby players – supposedly dropped by an orienteer crossing the playing field area.
Having had such a marvellous turnout tonight, we are now really looking forward to the first of our Summer Forest Series this SUNDAY, 20th February. If you have been enjoying the park events and can make it on Sunday, PLEASE do come and give orienteering in the forest a try, I promise you, you will not regret it!! Woodhill forest is a wonderful place, and the event centre is only a couple of minutes walk from that great West coast beach – bring a picnic and enjoy it on the beach or on the top of a sandhill afterwards. There will be six courses, with the easiest simpler than anything at the summer park events, so there is absolutely no reason to be concerned it will be too hard – you can choose the course with which you feel comfortable. Our suggestion for first timers would be to start with a simple one. Forest event courses are colour coded for difficulty – white, yellow, orange and red, from easiest to hardest. Course 4 in the summer series is ‘whitish yellow’, course 3 orange on the yellow side and course 1 and 2 orange/red. Newcomers, if you have been doing course 3, try the yellow course on Sunday (course 5). Course 1 and 2 runners, if you are confident mapreaders, try the orange course (course 4), otherwise give the yellow course a go, trying to read the map all the time and then if you find it easy go and do some or all of the orange course.
Experienced orienteers – there is plenty for you too – there will be 3 red courses – a great start for your warm up towards the Nationals at Easter – not much more than a month away!!!
Sport Ident electronic timing will be used, so if you own an e card, make sure you bring it! For those that don’t own a card, they can be hired for $3. First timers who have collected a voucher from the summer series, the hire of the card is included in your free run. E cards can also be purchased from registration for $50 so if you feel you are going to be coming to a few forest events it is well worthwhile buying your own.
If you are doing an orange or red course you should also have a compass – these can be borrowed from registration. It would be sensible to also practice using one on the yellow course so that you are confident with it when you move on to an orange course. We also recommend, as a safety precaution, that everyone carries a whistle – we will have a few for sale for $2 from registration.
Costs Members/nonmembers adult $8/$10, Student $4/$5, Family max $16/$20, e cards $3 extra, (ecards free for 10 year olds and under). Please note - non return of e cards $50
Instructions for coming events
Sunday 20th February starts 10.00am-12.30 Woodhill forest, Rimmer Road entrance, off SH16, north of Waimauku – go to the end of the NW motorway and turn left towards Helensville – signposted from SH16
Next week the summer series event is WEDNESDAY – Please note, this is the first of the 2 WEDNESDAY events. Ambury Park, Ambury Rd, Mangere Bridge – beside the ARA information centre. As this is a farm park I am afraid the ARA does not allow dogs in this area. There are some barbeques provided in the car park, so why not bring along a picnic and enjoy the evening.
