Despite the threatening rain we had a great night. It appears it was rather better than the Zoo had on their ‘stay open late’ night. Because we knew they were staying open we were able to have the parking in the quarry area of the park but, probably because of the weather, it probably wasn’t essential. However it was something a bit different for us.
Thanks very much to Ken and Diane Taylor for the setting of the courses tonight and to Peter who was controller. Peter flew in from down south just in time to see the end of the event. There were a few wet feet returning after some decided on a route choice across the streams!
Next week we’re at Ambury Park and this event is on Wednesday. That is only 6 days away on the 20th. To get to Ambury Park, you cross the Manukau Harbour from Onehunga and take the first off ramp, turn right and go straight ahead until you can’t. At this point go left until you see the signs pointing the way to the map. There will be signs from the motorway off ramp (we hope).
Note, we have a great event in the forest this Sunday,
starts between 10.00am and 12.30. The gate will be open from 9.15am.. This is an
ideal event for you to come and give forest orienteering a go. We’re in Woodhill
Forest on a map called Celebre. To get there you take the NW motorway to its end
and then continue on through Kumeu then Waimauku and about another 15 minutes to
Rimmers Rd where you turn left. The map is only 5 minutes from this turn. There
will be O signs from Waimauku. There will be courses for all levels of skill and
fitness and help will be given to anyone who asks. There will also be a group
coaching session towards the end of the event (about 1pm), after you have done
your course. We’ll be using electronic timing so if you own an e-card bring it
along. If you don’t have one, we have plenty for hire. We also have compasses
you can borrow. There are 8 courses for you to choose from so there will be
something for all levels of fitness and ability. Events in the forest are colour
coded from white (very easy, around tracks), yellow – quite easy, with controls
just off tracks, orange – getting a bit more difficult – you need to go across
forest blocks but there will be a catching feature not far behind you control,
and red – as hard as the setter likes! There will be 4 red courses of different
lengths, 2 orange (with the longer one specially added for fit folk who want to
go a reasonable distance but have limited orienteering experience), one yellow
and one white. We look forward to welcoming you into the forest - if you are
enjoying the parks, just wait until you have had a taste of forest orienteering!
