NEXT WEEK – Tuesday 20th, Self’s Farm – using electronic timing – Plus coaching - details below
What another perfect evening. As we climbed Hamlins Hill to get the last controls in the fading light there was a beautiful glow on the horizon. Often we get the best views after everyone has gone home. Well you all got a real extra bonus for Valentines day, didn’t you. Not only did you get the challenge of the orienteering course, you have been provided with entertainment for the rest of the night removing the biddy bids! It was good to see you all take them in good humour and not let them spoil your visit to this dear little volcano. Many commented that they had not been there previously and there were many comments of thanks to Ionel for his challenging courses. Our very big apologies to those of you who were later out on the memory course to find someone had removed the piece of map from some of the controls. You really are at a loss on a memory course without the map to show you where to go next. This is the first time I remember this happening to us and it was very disappointing given that lots of you had decided to give it a try tonight, many for the first time. Please don’t let it put you off doing it next time.
Nest week, Tuesday 20th we are on another but very different volcano, this time with the crater filled by a lake, and no biddy bids!!. Self’s Farm is a private farm in Tidal Rd, Papatoetoe, off Massey Rd. Mr Self is very generous, welcoming us back each year so please to respect his property. He usually has cattle which are fascinated by both the controls and the visitors but they are only curious so don’t be concerned about them. If they come to see you just turn and say hullo. Please cross all gates at the hinge end, leave them as you find them, and if crossing a fence do so at a strainer post. As we are on private land we can use our electronic timing system to show those new to orienteering what we use in the forest. We won’t have to enter results until the wee small hours next week! If you own an e card, please bring it with you.
COACHING – We will also be having the first of our coaching sessions at Self’s Farm, commencing at 7.15, for about 20 minutes. This is aimed at those new to orienteering who would like to learn a bit more about the techniques which will help them orienteer in places like the forest when you don’t have such obvious landmarks as in city parks. Come and do your course and then David Stewart, our club coach will run a session for all those interested.
