WEDNESDAY 22nd February Selfs Farm – using electronic timing (SPORT IDENT) (STARTS 5.50-6.45) (would help if you email us name and course if plan to come)
SUNDAY 26th February Rimmers Rd, Woodhill – using electronic timing (SPORT IDENT) (STARTS 10.00am-12.30pm)
A beautiful evening, a fascinating line course and couples looking for a quiet place for a valentines evening having their peace spoilt by lots of people with maps going everywhere. One control was mapped by a park bench but an amorous couple shifted it to a more secluded spot so we had to hunt around for an alternative bench to put in the spot. Those who went to the University had a control under the theatre grandstand built for the Summer Shakespeare or in a spot elsewhere after a helpful person shifted it – we hope no one went on stage looking for it!
For those who did the line course there is a map on the Club web page showing where the 8 controls were (http://www.orienteeringauckland.org.nz/Domain.jpg). We weren’t able to properly check whether you did this line course properly – in the one place where there was a viable alternative control it happened that they had the same punch pattern – bother. Thanks very much to Catherine Crofts and Mira (and Dave) for their efforts in organising tonights event. Catherine was determined to do something different and her choice of a line course was brilliant. Also we hope the course 4 people liked getting to a different area of the map.
Next week we have 3 events!! On Monday NIGHT there is the first of our REAL NIGHT EVENTS – ie in the dark, with a torch!! This event is on Ambury Park, Ambury Road, Mangere Bridge (the ARC Park). Youngsters may go off at dusk (some time after 8.15) and others when it gets truly dark (from about 9.00pm) There will be 3 course of about 5km, 3km and 1.5km – ie a bit shorter than the usual Summer Series events so it will not be a late night. YOU WILL DEFINITELY NEED AT TORCH!! (There are not too many street lights in Ambury Park!!)
The normal Summer Series event moves to WEDNESDAY next week, 22nd February, at Self’s Farm. Tidal Rd, Papatoetoe – see below
Note From next week’s Course setter
Selfs Farm is coming up on Wednesday the
22nd Feb. This is a great location held on a working farm. It's got everything,
great views, a huge lake, large rocks, bush, the island and a Kiwifruit orchard.
You get a chance to get up close and personal with the cattle (aka McDonalds
burgers) and you'll see part of Auckland that not many people get a chance to
enjoy. Courses one and two are going to get their feet a bit wet, so a change of
shoes for later. From the city take the motorway over the Mangere bridge, veer
towards Manakau, then take the Massey Rd off ramp turn right over the motorway
and then first left into Tidal Rd, 1.4km later you are there.

WE WILL BE USING SPORT IDENT AT SELF’S FARM. It would help us if you could reply to this email if you think you will be there (unless you put your name down tonight), giving your name and expected course so we can do some data entry before the event. It does not matter if you change your mind on the day. Club orienteers PLEASE bring your e cards.
Also please note Selfs farm is a private farm and we are extremely grateful to Mr Self who so generously allows us access to his lovely farm in the midst of the city each year. Please respect his property. Cross all fences at the main posts and all gates at the hinge end. Leave all gates as you find them. Some fences have an electric strand outrigger. These will be on. Shorter courses will not need to cross these. The cattle are friendly and curious. If they follow you turn and talk to them. Do not frighten them. Look forward to seeing you there!!
Then to top off a busy week, on the following Sunday, 26th February is the first of the Summer Series Forest events in Woodhill Forest, north of Kumeu of SH16. Starts from 10am till 12.30pm. More details next week! If you have not been to a forest event before, please collect a voucher at a Summer Series event which will entitle you to a free forest run.
It has also got to the time of the year when we would love to encourage non club members who have enjoyed the summer series to think about joining the club and coming along to our Sunday events throughout the rest of the year. As an enticement if you join the club now you will receive the rest of the Summer Series park events free (if you have bought a seasons ticket we will reduce the membership cost). Club membership is $65 senior, $40 student or $90 family. Membership forms available at the Summer Series or on the AOC web page
