Do hope you all enjoyed using Sport Ident tonight – we are certainly enjoying it now with no results entry to do!
I heard many people return tonight to say it was their favourite map, made even more enjoyable tonight by a beautiful evening and great courses set by Nick Monteith and controlled by Claude Dabaliz. They also did the complete preparation of the maps and the Sport Ident system, which was just great.
There were a few eventful happenings tonight. Reports came back of some flourishing greenery of a questionable nature close to one control over a bank, which had gone unnoticed by the course setter. We were also taken by surprise towards the end of the evening to look up and see a large herd of cows peering at us from a previously unoccupied paddock, a couple of them chewing happily on the start banner! Some hastily gathered ‘cattle dogs’ saw them safely back into their paddock. We were a little distressed later, however, to realize that it appears they had originated from two different paddocks.
All the best to all of you off to the Katoa Po Night Relay Champs at Taupo this weekend – always a highlight of the orienteering year and one in which Auckland teams have done really well in recent years - Go Well!!
Only ONE Summer Series Event to come!! Next week sees our last park event for the summer as we loose daylight saving a couple of days later – already the evenings are closing in on us – the pack up had to be done by torchlight tonight.
The last event is on THURSDAY, 17th March at One Tree Hill – always a great map for the finale of the season. We are starting by the playground and observatory, close to the Manukau Rd entrance to One Tree Hill, but we have decided to put the registration campomatic in Haydn Ave which is off Manukau Rd just along from the entrance to the park. There is lots of parking up there, or you can park within the park by the playground and observatory (but be careful if you are staying late that you are not behind where they put up the chain). For those of you who are feeling that park orienteering is becoming a bit too easy, or who really want to test what your contour reading is like, we will have a contour only course – a great preparation for those of you off to the Nationals at Easter!
Although the Summer Series Park Orienteering events finish next Thursday, we still have two more Summer Forest Series events to come – on Sunday the 20th March and 17th April, both in Woodhill forest, followed by a whole winter of great forest orienteering, so there is no need to put away those running shoes and hibernate until next summer!
