Christmas greetings. 2015 has been a big year with lots of successes for AOC. Some stand-outs have been:

a

Junior Training Camp - AOC hosted the National Junior Training Camp just concluded with over 100 kids and coaches accommodated, catered for and coached. This was a big exercise in planning and logistics throughout the year and a big thanks goes to Linda, Dwayne, Jeff, John, Liz, Steve, Kieran and many of the day helpers and coaches that made the camp such a success. Many junior club members were participants plus we had Jonty Oram, Kieran Woods and Tommy Hayes as part of the national coaching team. Congratulations. The camp is held every December and is hosted by different club each year. Christchurch are hosting the camp in 2016 so sign up you high school juniors.

Juniors - we had lots of junior successes during the year at Auckland School sprints, North Island and National secondary schools and other regional competitions. Well done to all our juniors

a

Tommy Hayes - congratulations Tommy Hayes on your selection in the NZ team for JWOC held in Norway in July. Tommy did brilliantly competing at his first world champs in tricky and physical Norwegian terrain. He had more success in Australia in October winning their national M20E sprint and long distance titles and a 3rd in the middle distance [Ed won so that's OK]. Tommy has been recently named in the National under 23 squad. Well done Tommy, looking forward to tracking you in 2016.

Great to see Rob Jessop in the results too. A clean sweep of the M45 Australian national titles.

a

Crosby family - Martin achieved his ambitious goal of competing in 100 different orienteering races in 2015 - that’s 503 km of navigation, 85 hours & 1700 controls. Catch up on his entertaining stats below. Anna and James also posted an impressive 80 or so events.

a

Auckland relays champs - AOC won the trophy for the first time in decades. A great day out at the Botanic Gardens. Well done team (winning photo above).

a

Training days - in conjunction with North West we hosted 3 training days this year. These were really well attended by members with over 100 participants at most of the trainings. Thanks to Jeff for the big organising effort.

a

Auckland Orienteering Series - we trialled a new format in 2015 with some variety. A sprint plus a successful double middle event at Beautiful Hills in Woodhill has been given popular approval.

a

Club Champs - we had a club champs for the first time in ages in some premium terrain at Whites Line in Woodhill. Watch for a prizegiving to come.

a

AOC has a fresh new website. Thanks Roger Woodroofe.

a

WMOC 2017 and Oceania - we've made a lot of progress this year planning for these major international events in Auckland in 2017. Several club members are taking on organising roles which is great to see. Check out details at http://oceania2017.nz/

a

A good number of members are heading to Southern Orienteering Week next month based around Wanaka. The Christmas break used to be a quiet period for orienteering down under but lots of us have broken that rule for a few years now. Great to go and experience some new O' terrain in the mountains. Good luck to all. Have a happy and safe Christmas and see you again in the new year. Guy

Raewyn Bennett

Raewyn, a long standing member of AOC, passed away last month. Raewyn made an enormous contribution to club life including roles as our Treasurer and equipment officer. A few members attended a memorial service for Raewyn in December. This was a fitting celebration of her life and contribution to yachting, conservation and orienteering.

Raewyn’s knowledge was vast. Orienteering is a complex sport - we ask people if we can use their land, we ask that members build things for us, we ask if members can fix things and we ask for advice. Everything is done with precision and the highest levels of accuracy. All this work, voluntary of course, was the true domain for Raewyn.

Our orienteering controls built by Raewyn and John are the best there's ever been. Others have fallen but the Bennett's controls stood. Raewyn also procured our big purchase of high tech equipment and managed exchange rate dealings and freight forwarders as well as the finances in her role as Treasurer. If you needed a "bloke" with a 4WD Raewyn would be the first to put her hand up. The steep sandy tracks in Woodhill Forest were no problem to her. Towing a fully loaded caravan with equipment - no problem.

Â

Raewyn was instrumental in organising the 24 hour Rogaine AOC hosted a few years ago. This was a huge logistical challenge for the club but Raewyn without even a blink was up for the whole 24 hours organising and delivering logistics to the most remote parts of the Port Waikato area.

Raewyn also understood what was required to manage first aid and safety issues. Without her our club may have breached the required standards many times.

Raewyn's volunteering was enormously inspiring and energising. We have lost a great member but the amazing legacy that Raewyn has left for the club will be visible for many years ahead. The club sends it’s deepest sympathies to John, Jono and Alex and the wider family.

2016 events

a

A programme of Auckland events is in draft form for 2016. Whilst a few members will be putting a lot of time into planning for 2017 we still have a full programme including forest and sprint trainings. The calendar will be published as soon as it is finalised.

Summer Nav - safety and security

aa

During our first Summer Series event at the Domain this year some orienteers came across a few more 'camps' than usual. We’re very aware that encountering a camp can be off-putting and particularly daunting if occupied when down in some of the deepest green bits of the Domain. We’ve been speaking with Auckland Council regarding the issue and realistically we expect that the camps will be difficult to clear. Our final Summer Nav event is at the Domain on. We’ve agreed that only courses 1 and 2 will go into the green parts of the lower Domain and that controls will be located away from the known camp areas.

If you have questions please contact me. Cheers Guy

Club laptop

aa

One of our club laptops has gone missing. If in your travels you come across an unfamiliar device with various orienteering software installed (OCAD, Sport Ident, etc - it will be obvious) please get in touch. It was one of our older club laptops but still used at events.
