The annual AOC winter street series is back for another year

Starting from next Wednesday you can turn up to the locations below and orienteer for an hour by torch and street lighting.

Very little orienteering experience is required. More akin to a run around suburbia with a map to keep your mind occupied.

The objective is to navigate to 6, 10, 14 or 18 controls and return to base within an hour. You choose your route and the number of controls you want to visit depending on how far you want to run. As a guide 6 controls can be visited walking in an hour, 18 controls will require a fast run and you'll likely cover 12-14km.

Maps will be given out at 18.55 giving you 5 minutes planning time before starting at 19.00. Return an hour later for a hot cup of soup and a chat. Refer to our website for more details www.auckoc.org.nz

If you’re not able to make this May/June series there’ll be another winter street series starting in September at 4 new locations - locations in Balmoral and Pt Chevalier already confirmed

Auckland Orienteering Club is hosting the Auckland Year 7/8 Interzone Championships at Cornwall Park, Archery club car park, on Tuesday 20th May.

The annual Auckland orienteer of the year series starts in  July. AOC is running 3 of these events and we’re looking for event coordinators for 13 July, 14 Sept and 19 Oct. Please call me if you can help out.

What was happening in Auckland Orienteering . . .

. . . 30 years ago?

• The club magazine invited members of the club to volunteer some time to do some mapping.  Interested members were encouraged to contact the club’s top mapper – Selwyn Palmer.
• A new computer game “The Forest” became available for Sinclair ZX Spectrum and TRS80 users.  Sounding remarkably like Catching Features (but with screenshots that were definitely from the 80s) it was described as “original, entertaining, intellectually satisfying and has an unlimited interest span”.
• It was announced that the Australian O Team manager for their recent tour to New Zealand had become a priest.  Whether these two events were connected was not made clear.

. . . 20 years ago?

• A number of events in Woodhill Forest had to be moved to other venues due to protesters blocking Inland Rd.
• The AOA newsletter changed from 8pt to 11pt font, not without some controversy, of course.
• Mark Roberts edited the newsletter and in an editorial raised an interesting question “why do North West and Central hate each other?”  After considering the possibility of someone running off with someone else’s husband, money being the root of all evil and even raising ham sandwiches as a possible cause, he eventually came to the conclusion that we are bound to be rivals but not enemies.
• In reply John Powell, on behalf of the Central club committee, denied that “slandering NWOC is a standard agenda item at Central Club committee meetings which is passed unanimously with a standing ovation and shouted insults”. John also described the meetings as “boring”.

. . . 10 years ago?

• John Powell was still writing letters to the editor of the magazine, this month opining that SportIdent, while appropriate for pre-entry major events, should not be used at OYs due to the delay in getting results out.
• Auckland once again won Katoa Po with the first three legs (white, yellow and orange) being run by Toby Scott, Imogene Scott and Simon Jager in that order.
• M10 and W10 grades were introduced at the National Champs, running on the White course.  As a result, the older grades moved up a difficulty with M/W12 going from White to Yellow, M/W14 from Yellow to Orange and M/W16 from Orange to Red.
• Auckland Club (with a lot of help from their friends) ran the 2004 NZ Rogaining Championships at Port Waikato, the first and last true 24 hour rogaine run by the club.
