Point England 22Feb22
We were once again blessed with a beautiful evening to run around Point England. Our thanks to Bob and Scott for the courses tonight and also to our on the night helpers, Susy, Martin, Anna, Neill, David, Sarah and Bruce (and Panda).
Maps like this one where you need to leave the park map and change to a different scaled road map to get the distance for the longer courses create a challenge for both the setter and the orienteer. It can be hard for the orienteer to adjust to the very different scale as you change maps with distances to travel suddenly becoming much further or shorter as you change from small to large scale and back. The leaving and returning controls on the park will be shown on both maps so it is important you use the extra detail that can be shown on the more detailed map. The 1 to 10000 wider area maps have little detail on them. This is also something to remember when you are running on them. Listening to conversations afterwards some people did not generalise the land in their minds enough when looking for controls on the road map and therefore searched in the wrong place. We did have a few controls temporarily tampered with during the event. A club member running early had to retrieve a couple of controls from the stream on the park map and unfortunately the second to last control on course 4 got taken, not to be found so had to be replaced. If you see youngsters taking an interest in a control when you are out on your course we would appreciate it if you could spare the time to have a chat, explain what it is and even ask them if they could keep an eye on it for you to make sure it doesn’t move! We have had great success with this over the years although the rest of the orienteers coming through are likely to be loudly directed to where the control is!! One apology/explanation for control HW at the beginning of course 1,2 and 3. This open area of the map has changed recently. It used to be long grass, grazed by cattle with quite a few small features hidden away on it. This area is scheduled for development so is now mowed and most of the features have disappeared. This had happened to where control HW was to be placed so a little innovation was needed to place our own Man Made feature on the appropriate spot. We hope you enjoyed having a chair to rest on as you went through although it may have been more appreciated at the end of your course than the beginning and I am sorry there was no sun umbrella and cool refreshments there too!!!
Next week there are TWO events. The normal SummerNav moves to THURSDAY, at the Domain, starting from The Cresent, near the Band Rotunda. Entries are now open and as this venue is always popular I recommend you not leaving it to the last day to enter to avoid missing out. Also, next week we have our NIGHT EVENT. This is on Saturday, 5th March at Hamlins Hill, entry off Great South Road. Younger folk who want to start before it is truly dark can start by about 8.15 (you do want to have to be using a torch by the end or the fun goes!!) Others should wait until it is properly dark – 8.30 – 8.45 depending in the weather. This event will be using electronic (SPORTIDENT) timing so when you enter you will be asked for your SI card number, if you have one, or enter HIRE – we will loan them to you for free for this event. At the moment, we will only allow for one entry time slot for this event. If numbers get too big we may split the younger folk going out a bit earlier from the later people but will let you know if this looks necessary. The entry for this event will be up in a day or so – please enter as early as you can so we can plan for numbers accordingly. Night events are great fun and at the moment who would want to be sitting in a crowded restaurant or theatre when you could be out in the open running over the hills by torch light!!!
