Monti Cecelia 09Feb22
Despite the very heavy humid air last night we once again escaped with a dry night for a full capacity group of orienteers to join all the dog walkers in the lovely Monte Cecelia Park. As one of Auckland’s newer parks it is perhaps not as well known by people outside the local area, so we hope you all enjoyed Sam and Matthews very interesting courses, including a trip down to the coast for those brave enough to venture out on course 1. Again, our thanks to you all for ensuring you were well spread around the start area and wearing masks until you had collected your maps and started your courses. We can feel confident we are fitting well within the COVID guidelines and it is a safe environment for us all to be able continue doing the sport we love but we are sorry to those who missed on getting a spot due to number limits.
Next week the event moves to TUESDAY 15th February at Macleans Park, starting from Eastern Beach Reserve which is at the south eastern end of The Esplanade. The longer 2 courses will leave the park to visit 2 neighbouring parks which have only been used at one previous event. It will be full tide at 7.30pm so make sure you put in your togs and towel for a cool off after you run. If we can believe the forecast it will also be a lovely evening for a picnic! A word or warning when you are choosing your course when entering. The lengths are the correct orienteering distance – that is they are the straight line distance between the controls except where there is an out of bounds area that they are measured around. However, on this map, unless you are a sadist, you will all travel much further than these quoted distances as they go straight through steep, fairly densely forested valleys. All courses will also do a fair amount of climb. Therefore, don’t be tempted to run a course up because the distances look shorter – they have been set to be equivalent to the longer lengths on the more open and flatter parks we are often in.
Also, advanced notice that the first of the AOS Sunday morning events will be held on Barry Curtis Park on Sunday, 20th Feb, hosted by the CM club. Again, this event will need to comply with COVID restrictions so please see the details on their website.
See you next Tuesday!
