36th SummerNav
Lloyd Elsmore Park
Event: 14
2024-02-29
Planner: Georgia Lindroos & Alicia McGivern - Controller: Joanna & Alistair Stewart
What another beautiful evening for our SummerNav tonight. Our thanks to Georgia and Alicia for setting tonights courses and taking the longer courses down to the more adventurous part of the park. This was enjoyed by all and there were some long discussions about the best way to go on some of these legs. One of our overseas visitors who has been with us for the last few weeks commented that most of our parks did not have much adventure so it was good to be able to use a less manicured portion. I did recommend to him that there will be more adventure to come at Hamlins Hill in the dark on Saturday!!
Yes, this Saturday (2 days time) is our SummerNav night event at Hamlins Hill, accessed off Great South Rd. We will be using electronic timing at this event so if you have an e card don’t forget to bring it along – but we will have plenty to loan out to you if you don’t have one of your own. Young folk on the short course can start at dusk – at about 8.15, but others should wait until it is properly dark!. There will be 4 courses to chose from but they will be rather shorter than the usual SummerNav events – it is rather slower orienteering in the dark. Make sure you bring a good headlamp or torch that has batteries that will last the distance. This night event is part of the SummerNav series so if you have a seasons ticket it is included in that.
Next week the event is again on Thursday 7th March on a brand new map, starting from Mt Roskill War Memorial Reserve. The event centre will be off Sandringham Rd, beside the Lovelock track.
Club members – if you have not got your Katoa Po entry in, do so NOW - EnterO entries close tonight!
And advance notice – the first of the club forest events will be on SATURDAY 16th March in Riverhead forest. This will follow on after the the middle distance trial for the NZ team going to the Junior World Champs so starts for the rest of us will be between 11.30 and 1pm. It will also be a middle distance event – so shorter than our usual forest courses and therefore an ideal introduction to forest orienteering, as well as preparation for those off to the Nationals at Easter. For those of you who have only done city orienteering, to encoursage you to come out and experience the real delight of orienteeruing in the forest, we will be offering you this first run at club members costs (so 50% off the non member rate). When entering, when it asks for a club enter ‘other’ and then when asked to specify enter Firsttime. Hopefully you will have such a great time you will make sure you have joined the club before the next forest event!!
As this is the JWOC trials weekend, on Sunday (17th) NWOC will be hosting the JWOC long trials in Woodhill forest and will also be running a public event later in the morning. See the website for full details and how to enter these 2 days of orienteering!!
