36th SummerNav Waiatarua Event: 11 2024-02-08

It was certainly a warm evening for running around Waiatarua reserve this evening – I am sure there were lots of people envious of the dogs cooling off in their swimming hole and being hosed down outside the campermatic afterwards! Thank you Sarah and Mervyn for tonight’s courses. They put in a lot of extra work to extend the map over to Stonefields for the longest course – it was great seeing some of you taking on the 11 km challenge. It made their work worthwhile.

The addition of the maze also brought a change of pace and technique after some long legs around the park and roads. A maze is great practice for quick decision making of route choice so great practice for events like the Triple Crown event that the club hosted over the last weekend. The artificial fences that are put up and marked as black lines on the map are representing uncrossable boundaries – those of you who lent over the tape to punch the control rather missed the point and the benefit of the exercise. You would have been disqualified at a serious event. SummerNav is just a fun event and so it is over to each of you to decide how seriously you want to take it. However, if you are wanting to improve your orienteering skills then you need to make the most of the challenges the setter gives you.

Next week the event is on WEDNESDAY, 14th Feb starting from the Alexandra Race course car park off Cambell  Crescent.
