Excitement ran high at the start of this evening as the small number of us that turned up early gathered around a TV monitor in the back of a car to watch the exciting first race of tonight’s America Cup racing. It was obvious what most Aucklanders were doing – on a map where the busiest time is usually quite early it looked as if no one was coming. However, with the end of the first race suddenly the event centre sprang into life and buzzed for the remainder of the evening. It was great to see so many Scouts and Guides taking part tonight.

We are delighted to be able to say that, despite what the flier says, this is NOT the final SummerNav for the season. We have been able to reschedule 2 of the events postponed due to COVID, starting with the Western Springs event, next WEDNESDAY, 24th March, starting from the end of Stadium Rd.

This will be followed the following week by the Auckland Domain event on TUESDAY, 30th April. These are the last 2 weeks before we lose daylight saving so the nights will be getting dark early. We will need to start collecting controls, probably before 7.30 if we are to get them out of the bush areas before dark so please try and get there as early as you can. We look forward to seeing you all at these events to give a great finale to the end of Summer!!

Now is the time that orienteering will move into the Sunday events with the first of these on this Sunday, 21st March in Woodhill Forest. You can start any time between 10am and 12.30. If you have enjoyed SummerNav you will just love these forest events. Don’t be concerned – there are 9 courses to choose from so there is definitely one suitable for everyone – the easiest is easier than course 4 at SummerNav. To show you how sure we are that you will have fun we are offering first timers to the forest a free run on Sunday. See the AOC website for full details and to pre enter. Although we will accept entries on the day, in order to be sure there is a map available on the course you wish to run, and so we have a full register of people at the event to satisfy COVID requirements, please do pre enter – you can do this up until Friday night. If you are a first timer just ignore the payment message but send an email to auckoc@hotmail.com to say you have entered as a first timer. There will be instruction available for first timers before you go out on your course, including a short map walk with a club member.
